Job Description: Performs ultrasound exams for interpretation to aid in patient diagnosis. Utilizes independent judgment in the application of non‑ionizing, high‑frequency ultrasonic waves for diagnosis of disease. Collaborates with clinicians to ensure appropriateness of studies and performs related administrative tasks.

Responsibilities

Prepares patient for ultrasound exam, positions patient on examination table according to departmental standard operating procedures, and explains procedures in layman’s terms to relieve pre‑testing anxiety.

Obtains pertinent imaging and diagnostic reports required for correlation with the ultrasound exam being performed.

Consults with referring physician regarding patient history and determines the appropriate ultrasound exam required.

Sets up equipment to administer the particular exam in a timely fashion, using machine settings to assure accurate results, employing technical judgment.

Performs ultrasound procedures and recognizes the significance of structures visualized in the oscilloscope, distinguishing artifacts from normal or pathologic processes.

Determines the need for more extensive evaluations beyond preliminary instructions.

Observes patient during the entire examination, recognizes and reports any changes in patient condition or motor abnormalities, including fainting or discoloration, in accordance with procedures.

Documents image details and labels the study; maintains records and logs of exams performed.

Performs frequent calibration checks/adjustments on ultrasound equipment and troubleshoots mechanical problems as necessary.

Qualifications Vocational or Technical School Diploma, required.

One (1) of the following credentials required:

Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS)

Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS)

Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS)

Advanced Cardiac Sonographer (ACS)

Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT)

Registered Vascular Sonographer (RVS)

Registered Technologist in Sonography (R.T.(S)(ARRT))

Registered Technologist in Vascular Sonography (R.T.(VS)(ARRT))

1‑3 Years of Technical Experience, required.

Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) with Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI), required.
