Position Highlights
Full time, 40 hours per week
Monday through Friday
First shift (7:30 AM to 4:00 PM)
On‑site position; no telework option
Position Requirements
Residency within 30 miles of the job location
For candidates without a CDL:
Selected candidates must obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) A or B with tank and airbrake endorsements, and a valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC) within 6 months of initial employment
Enrollment in an agency‑paid CDL training program will be provided; a CDL learning permit is required prior to starting
If candidates selected do not already have a CDL, they will need to have a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) prior to starting
For candidates who already possess a CDL:
Indicate type, issuing agency, license number, expiration date, and all endorsements in the Licenses and Professional Certifications section of your application
Complete the Connecticut Department of Transportation Commercial Driver Supplement (CTDOT-CDL-1) form thoroughly
Candidates with a Medical Examiner's Card (MEC) should include the MEC expiration date in the Licenses and Professional Certifications section
Interviews limited to candidates with the best fit for the role. Interviewees must produce a copy of their valid CDL Class A or B and MEC at interview time
Emergency duties: be available during storm events, weekends, holidays, and winter season overtime up to several days, including mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30
Qualified applicants must demonstrate required knowledge and experience on their application to proceed further
Prior to hire, selected candidates will complete a pre‑employment physical and work assessment including a respirator physical and fit test

Purpose of Job Class (Nature of Work) This class is accountable for performing a full range of highly skilled duties in automotive and mechanical equipment trade areas.
Examples of Duties
Perform highly skilled tasks in accordance with standard automotive and mechanical equipment trade practices and codes
Diagnose failure in all types of automotive and heavy mobile equipment
Repair, dismantle, overhaul, and reassemble front ends, engines, transmissions, rear ends, hydraulic systems, and automotive electrical systems
Construct and repair parts; weld or brazes parts by oxyacetylene torch or electric welding
Create estimates of time, personnel, and materials; record specifications and maintenance logs
Operate required testing equipment; liaise with other units and external contacts; operate heavy equipment if required
Respond to fire and/or crash emergencies at state-owned airports; perform related duties as required
Knowledge, Skill and Ability
Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply standard tools, materials, methods and standard automotive and mechanical equipment trade practices
Interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills
Ability to prepare estimates, keep shop records, and utilize computer software
Minimum Qualifications – General Experience Four (4) years of experience in automotive and mechanical equipment trade tasks.
Minimum Qualifications – Special Experience Two (2) years of the general experience must involve skilled automotive and mechanical equipment trades. For state employees, this experience is interpreted at the level of a Skilled Maintainer or Transportation Maintainer 2.
Minimum Qualifications – Substitutions Allowed
Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma in a maintenance trade area may substitute two (2) years of experience
Two (2) years as a Qualified Craft Worker Trainee in a maintenance trade area may substitute general and special experience
Experience performing technical duties in automotive and mechanical equipment trade on a military base, aircraft carrier, or large compound may substitute on a year‑for‑year basis
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in diesel, B‑Tech level, and light truck repairs
Education in diesel technology, auto repairs, and heavy equipment repair
Experience with diagnostic repairs across various makes and models, heavy trucks, construction equipment, and small engines
Experience with automotive repair software and diagnostic research
Experience with vehicle electric system diagnosis
Experience in repair welding, fabrication, and hydraulic systems repair
Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel; record‑keeping experience
Special Requirements Incumbents may be required to possess or acquire and retain appropriate current licenses, permits, and/or certifications.
Character Requirements At state airports, comprehensive background investigation may be conducted prior to appointment.
Physical Requirements
Adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, and visual and auditory acuity required; maintain fitness to perform duties
Physical examination may be required
Working Conditions
may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights, use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles, and may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment, extreme weather, or environmental conditions
may be required to complete hazardous materials training programs (asbestos, PCB, PFAS, etc.) consistent with EPA guidelines
