Position Highlights

Full time, 40 hours per week

Monday through Friday

First shift (7:30 AM to 4:00 PM)

This is an on-site position; it does not have a telework option

Position Requirements

Residency within 30 miles of the job location.

For candidates without a CDL: As a condition of permanent employment, selected candidates must obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) A or B with “tank and airbrake endorsements” and a valid Medical Examiner’s Card (MEC) within 6 months of initial employment. Selected candidates will be enrolled in, and expected to complete, an agency-paid CDL training program. Candidates must also obtain a CDL learning permit from the Department of Motor Vehicles.

For candidates who already possess a CDL: Indicate the type, issuing agency, license number, expiration date, and all endorsements in the “Licenses and Professional Certifications” section of your application. You will also be required to thoroughly complete the Connecticut Department of Transportation Commercial Driver Supplement (CTDOT-CDL-1) form.

Candidates who currently possess a MEC must include the MEC expiration date in the application.

Interviews will be limited to candidates whose experience and training most closely meet the requirements of the position. Those with a CDL will be required to produce a copy of their current valid CDL Class A or B and a valid MEC at the time of interview.

Support for Highway Operations units may require employees to be at work prior to, during, and after storm or weather events, potentially up to several days, including holidays and weekends. Overtime may also be required for winter season preparation.

Must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30.

Must demonstrate required knowledge and experience on application to proceed.

Prior to hire, selected candidates will be required to complete a preemployment physical and work assessment, including a respirator fit test upon hire.

Purpose of Job Class (Nature of Work) This class is accountable for performing a full range of highly skilled duties in the automotive and mechanical equipment trade area.

Examples of Duties

Perform highly skilled tasks in accordance with standard automotive and mechanical equipment trade practices and codes.

Diagnose failures in all types of automotive and heavy mobile equipment.

Service, dismantle, overhaul, and reassemble front ends, engines, transmissions, rear ends, hydraulic systems, and automotive electrical systems.

Construct and repair needed parts.

Weld or brazes parts by oxyacetylene torch or electric welding.

Make estimates of time, personnel, and determine and obtain required materials.

Keep necessary records.

Operate testing equipment for diagnosing automotive electronic components.

Act as liaison with other operating units and outside contacts.

Operate heavy equipment.

Respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations at state-owned airports.

Perform related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skill and Ability

Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply standard tools, materials, methods, and standard automotive and mechanical equipment trade practices.

Interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

Prepare estimates and keep shop records.

Utilize computer software.

Minimum Qualifications - General Experience Four (4) years of experience in tasks in the automotive and mechanical equipment trade.

Minimum Qualifications - Special Experience Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been performing skilled automotive and mechanical equipment trades.

Minimum Qualifications - Substitutions Allowed

Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma indicating completion of subject requirements in a maintenance trade area may substitute two (2) years of the General Experience.

Two (2) years of experience as a Qualified Craft Worker Trainee in a designated maintenance trade area may substitute for the General and Special Experience.

Experience performing technical duties within the automotive and mechanical equipment trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier, or large compound may be substituted for the General and Special Experience on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience performing diesel, B-Tech level, and light truck repairs.

Education in diesel technology repairs and/or auto repairs, and heavy equipment repair.

Experience maintaining and performing diagnostic repairs in various makes and models, heavy trucks, construction equipment, and small engines.

Experience with automotive repair software, including diagnostic and repair information research.

Experience with vehicle electric system diagnosis.

Experience in repair welding and fabrication.

Experience diagnosing and repairing basic hydraulic systems.

Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.

Experience with record keeping.

Special Requirements Incumbents may be required to possess or acquire and retain appropriate current licenses, permits, and/or certifications.

Character Requirements Each candidate may undergo a thorough background investigation before certification for appointment.

Physical Requirements

Adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, visual and auditory acuity, and maintain fitness to perform job duties.

A physical examination may be required.

Working Conditions

May be required to lift moderate to heavy weights, use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles, and be exposed to risk of injury from equipment, extreme weather, and environmental conditions.

May be required to complete hazardous materials training programs (asbestos, PCB, PFAS) in accordance with EPA guidelines.
