Position Eligibility:

This position is only open to Colorado state residents.

Department:

Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT). CDOT employees receive biweekly pay and benefit packages as described.

Description of Job About the Work Unit:

Provides engineering expertise in developing, building, and maintaining a safe and integrated transportation system.

Unit responsibilities include:

project management of highway system upgrades, reconstruction, maintenance; design oversight; NEPA documentation; consultant and construction management.

About the Position Engineer‑in‑Training position under the guidance of a licensed professional engineer. Responsibilities include construction inspection, testing, documentation, plan interpretation, quality control, supervision, and negotiation of changes on transportation construction projects.

Duties and Responsibilities Construction Engineering

Apply engineering principles and standards to construct transportation projects.

Act as Chief Engineer’s authorized representative for project completion.

Verify contractor compliance through inspections and documentation.

Review consultant/contractor compliance with federal and state requirements.

Oversee local agency projects.

Prepare accurate reports and correspondence.

Serve as primary CDOT contact for project issues.

Project Management

Prepare and manage bid packages and plan documents.

Represent CDOT at meetings with public and stakeholders.

Coordinate information with headquarters and regional offices.

Participate in committees and task forces.

Schedule projects and manage budgets.

Provide pay items and budgetary information.

Consultant Management

Supervise consultants and manage project delivery.

Inspect contractor work for compliance.

Estimate work hours, approve billing, and review deliverables.

Rate consultant projects and ensure regulatory compliance.

Develop scope of services and negotiate task orders.

Design Engineering

Develop design plans and specifications for roadway projects.

Request field surveys, environmental studies, and other data.

Conduct scoping and review meetings.

Evaluate proposed designs and recommend changes.

Prepare plans, tables, and bid packages.

Approve designs and stamp engineering plans.

Lead Work / Mentoring

Oversee work of other positions at CDOT.

Train and mentor staff and consultants.

Work Environment

Typical hours: 8:00 am–5:00 pm, Monday–Friday.

Approx. 70 % time in the field, 30 % in the office.

Travel required to project sites, meetings, and trainings.

Occasional evening, night, and weekend work.

Outdoor exposure to weather and hazardous conditions.

May operate CDOT vehicles.

Minimum Qualifications

Current enrollment as an Engineer Intern or valid Professional Engineer license in Colorado.

One year of professional experience in a related field.

Substitution Policies

Professional Engineer license may substitute for Engineer Intern enrollment.

Appropriate education may substitute for the required experience on a year‑for‑year basis.

Required Eligibility and Conditions of Employment

Must obtain a Professional Engineer license within eight years of appointment.

Pass a pre‑employment screening (background checks, driver license, etc.).

Valid driver license required.
