Safely and efficiently operate heavy equipment and power tools to perform skilled/manual activities and tasks, and transport materials, personnel, and supplies to complete work assignments. Operate heavy equipment such as
Dump Trucks, Front End Loader, Boom Truck, Truck mounted Boom Crane Lowboy, Mini-Excavator, Excavator Backhoe, Flatbed, Vac*Con and Bucket Truck
to transport equipment and/or materials to and from work sites. Operate power tools, use hand tools and perform a variety of skilled/manual tasks such as painting, infrastructure repairs, mowing, and may assist with cleaning and repair of sewer mains. Maintain, clean, and service equipment, vehicles, tools, and facilities. Inspect vehicles for required supplies, materials, and equipment. Observe and follow safety procedures and precautions at the worksite. Investigate and respond to complaints. Prepare and maintain reports, forms, and records of assignments, service calls and/or maintenance and repairs of equipment and tools using a work order system. May act as a lead on a crew and coordinate and monitor work assignments and personnel. Perform other duties as assigned. Working Conditions
This position routinely requires stooping, bending, and/or lifting of items weighing 30–80 pounds, with occasional periods of walking on rough surfaces. Employees will be exposed to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture, and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and minor physical trauma such as cuts, bruises, and minor burns. Minimum Requirements
Educational Requirements
Requires a high school diploma, GED, or the ability to read, write, add, subtract, and follow oral and/or basic written instructions at a level necessary for successful job performance. Supplemental specialized courses or training in the operation of construction equipment may be required. Experience Requirements
Six (6) months of experience performing manual and field work with power tools or equipment are required. License Requirements
Requires a valid Texas driver’s license and compliance with the City of Houston’s policy on driving. May be required to have a valid Class A or B Texas Commercial Driver License (CDL) based on the type of equipment the position is assigned to operate. Preferences
Preference for applicants with wastewater equipment maintenance, forklift, backhoe, & crane truck experience. Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants if such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position. General Information
The selection process will involve application review, interview, and possibly a skills assessment test. This position is a Department of Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier I Level. Safety Impact Position
Yes – This position is subject to random drug testing and, if a promotional position, the candidate must pass an assignment drug test. Pay Grade
