Seasonal Preservationist – National Park Service Join a seasonal team focused on preserving historic and natural resources at National Park Service.

Summary A selectee receives a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) with only the lowest step of the grade. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is April–October; entry on duty expected April 5, 2026. Duties performed outdoors as a journeyman, training peers on masonry, carpentry, and soil mixing for mortar repair.

Responsibilities

Provide building and grounds maintenance for a historic site with modern and extensive historic structures.

Perform prescribed preservation treatments (capping, veneering, repointing, resettling, new laying) on historic structures, foundations, ruins, contemporary buildings, stone blocks, and wood components.

Execute masonry work – construct, alter, modify, or repair pillars, mortar posts, framework, rafters, joists, insulation, sheet rock paneling, doors, windows, flooring, and roofing on historic/non‑historic structures.

Use a full range of power and hand tools; plan, compute, lay out projects, identify material needs, operate vehicles, lift up to 50 lb.

Requirements

U.S. Citizenship.

Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.

Participate in Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.

Wear a uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards; uniform allowance provided.

Work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work as needed.

Minimum age 18 years; high school graduate or equivalent; formal vocational training; school enrollment exceptions as described.

Qualifications

Ability to do work without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT).

Interpret instructions, specifications, and blueprint reading.

Use and maintain tools and equipment.

Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair.

Knowledge of materials.

Technical practices (theoretical precise, artistic).

Use of measuring instruments.
