Construction Vocational Instructor Applications will be accepted beginning Monday, January 5, 2026 12:00 AM (Eastern Standard Time)

The role is to lead our construction vocational program at LEAD Charter School, a mission‑driven community focused on transforming equity for young people in Newark. You will develop and implement competency‑based curriculum aligned with national standards and industry practices, work closely with students, parents, and the NOYN school model, and collaborate with staff to support student success.

WHO WE ARE LEAD Charter School serves students 16‑21 in grades 9‑12, providing a personalized, strengths‑based learning experience that bridges school and future careers. We use the Newark Opportunity Youth Network model and support students who have disengaged from traditional schooling.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Successful completion of a post‑secondary vocational/technical school program directly related to the carpentry trade (e.g., framing, exterior finishes, trims and soffits; cabinetry, etc.).

Five (5) years of experience performing carpentry work.

Demonstrated success in raising student achievement with underserved populations in construction training or related fields.

Strong commitment to youth and ability to work effectively with parents.

Commitment to the NOYN school model and implementation with fidelity.

Employees must possess a valid driver’s license.

ADDITIONAL PREFERENCES

National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) certification.

State of New Jersey certification as a vocational instructor.

Experience at a minimum journey level or technician level in area of expertise or at least three (3) years as a certified vocational/technical construction or maintenance teacher.

Training & Professional Development

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

Design and implement the hands‑on construction‑training component to align with nationally recognized construction trade curriculum (NCCER).

Identify vocational/instructional goals and develop specific plans for teaching them.

Acknowledge common student needs while recognizing differences in ability, interest, and growth potential.

Provide foundational construction knowledge through installation, maintenance, repair, and renovation of housing units, instructing students on proper techniques and code compliance.

Demonstrate competency in worksite management, housing construction, and carpentry work; use and maintain tools, materials, and equipment safely and orderly; manage inventory.

Maintain programmatic integrity by providing student performance feedback, developing remediation plans, and participating in team meetings.

Show high effort, commitment to the organization, trustworthiness, and responsible behavior.

Serve on a 3‑person interdisciplinary team, sharing worksite performance insight and developing individualized learning plans with Advocate Counselors and Academic Instructors.

Pursue professional growth and meet role‑model standards of a youth development practitioner and educator.

Display respect for students’ rights, feelings, and property, encouraging a culture of respect.

Maintain accurate student records and submit required reports on time.

Contribute to student registration and inclusive mental toughness planning, facilitation, and reflection activities.

Participate in weekly education team meetings, full‑staff meetings, interdisciplinary meetings, and other assigned group meetings.

Adhere to and promote the school’s philosophy and Board of Trustees objectives.

Perform other duties as assigned in accordance with contractual agreements or Board policies.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Salary to be recommended by the Head of School and approved by the Board.

EVALUATION

Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with the Board’s policy on evaluation.
