Recreation Assistant – Pearl Harbor Fitness Center Recreation Assistant at Pearl Harbor Fitness Center supports facility operations, manages revenue collection, provides customer service, and plans and facilitates morale, welfare and recreation (MWR) recreational activities.

Major Duties and Responsibilities Administrative Support

Provides customer service to patrons, including greeting customers, checking identification cards, issuing/receiving gear or equipment, and registering patrons for facility use, events, and classes.

Answers telephone inquiries about facility hours, upcoming special events, and programs.

Completes Daily Activity Reports, handles cash where fees apply, verifies the amount collected, and deposits the cashier bag in the drop safe.

Assists in planning, scheduling, and publicizing activities and maintaining related supplies to attract and motivate participants.

Oversees the sale of retail items associated with activities.

Evaluates the effectiveness of ongoing MWR fitness activities from the standpoint of participants’ responses, resources, and program objectives.

Monitors patrons, volunteers, and contractors during assigned program or event and reports any issues to management.

Assists in selecting fitness, sports, and aquatics activities to be offered within required basic program categories and additional possibilities based on participant interests and needs.

Instructional Support

Monitors assigned participants in indoor and outdoor activities, including intramural sporting events.

Conducts instructional classes in the assigned recreational area.

Performs basic fitness orientation and corrects unsafe fitness techniques.

Demonstrates procedures common to the activities and instructs in the use of related equipment.

Establishes and reviews the schedule of events, conducts tours, and sets up/prepares gymnasiums, facilities, and playing fields prior to scheduled start times (e.g., lap swim, lifeguard training, exercise programs, races, pool parties, sporting events).

Ensures adherence to regulations and safety procedures.

Facility/Equipment Maintenance

Ensures the facility and sporting fields are open and/or closed at posted times.

Monitors and checks the security of premises.

Monitors activity within the facility, circulating among patrons to aid with basic equipment use and maintaining order and discipline.

Ensures athletic playing surfaces are maintained safely and ready for play.

Assists in cleaning and maintaining equipment/facilities, maintains inventory, and performs general janitorial services (e.g., sweeping and mopping floors; dusting and cleaning workout areas, mirrors, bathrooms, locker areas).

Makes minor repairs to facilities and equipment when appropriate and assists with outdoor maintenance.

Reports maintenance problems, material deficiencies, and unsafe conditions to the supervisor.

2. Supervisory Controls Works under the direct supervision of the Fitness and/or Sports, Aquatics Program Managers or Fitness Facility and Maintenance Manager, using initiative to complete daily/routine assignments.

Occasional travel of less than 10% may be required.

Requirements

Must pass all applicable records and background check.

Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check. Any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment.

Qualifications

Knowledge of MWR policies, rules, and regulations involving the work area.

Basic arithmetic skills to compute charges, disperse change accurately, and prepare reports.

Knowledge of cash handling procedures.

Knowledge of basic fitness, aquatics, and sports principles.

Knowledge of safe use and operation of fitness equipment and facility operations, as well as basic equipment maintenance/repair.

Skill in the use of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and other relevant software.

Skill and ability to provide fitness, aquatics, and sports training or orientation.

Ability to independently carry out day‑to‑day recreation operations.

Ability to develop and effectively deliver presentations and/or training.

Effective oral and written communication skills.

Certifications and Other Requirements

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certification.

Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification.

Blood‑borne Pathogen certification.

Navy Basic Fitness certification.

Must obtain and maintain a National Agency Check with Written Inquiries (NACI) upon hiring and renew every 5 years (or a Child Care NACI when required).

Physical Demands

Extended hours of sitting and standing; exercise demonstrations or prolonged hours may be required.

Ability to lift objects up to 45 pounds unassisted and heavier with assistance.

Work Environment

Includes normal safety precautions typical of recreation specialty activities.

May involve special safety precautions during specific activities (e.g., leading physical training, moving equipment, carrying aquatics equipment).

Facilities may be subject to varying conditions such as weather, temperature, and humidity.

Education No positive education requirement.

Salary Salary is dependent on experience and/or education.
