A community-centered energy leader is seeking a hands‑on Forester to manage wood fuel procurement for one of Vermont’s most established biomass power plants. This role sits at the intersection of forestry, regulatory compliance, and supplier partnership. You’ll own the full lifecycle of timber harvest planning, state approvals, and on‑the‑ground oversight. You’ll spend most of your time in the field evaluating logging sites and working directly with loggers, balanced with reporting, planning, and coordination from home or the plant. This is an ideal role for a licensed Vermont Forester who values independence, enjoys being outdoors, and wants to play a critical role in renewable energy production. They are looking for a self‑directed, field‑oriented forester who is comfortable owning their territory, building relationships, and ensuring every acre harvested meets Vermont’s forestry standards.
Forester Responsibilities
Procure and manage wood fuel supply for biomass power generation
Develop timber harvest plans and submit regulatory notifications to the State of Vermont
Ensure full compliance with Vermont harvesting policies, permits, and forestry best practices
Inspect forest sites to evaluate harvestability and biomass suitability
Serve as the primary liaison between loggers, suppliers, and state regulators
Conduct regular site visits to ensure harvesting follows approved plans
Maintain accurate documentation for wood sourcing, inventory, and compliance reporting
Coordinate with plant operations on wood quality and delivery requirements
Build and maintain strong relationships with ~20 core suppliers and broader producer network
Prepare required reports and submissions to state agencies
Forester Requirements
Valid Vermont Forester License
Valid driver’s license and ability to travel extensively throughout Vermont forests
Forestry experience, including work with logging operations, state agencies, or private forestry organizations
Comfort working independently and managing a self‑directed schedule
Ability to traverse forested terrain in all weather conditions and lift to 50 lbs.
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Working knowledge of forestry regulations, harvest planning, and compliance processes
Proficiency with basic computer tools
Bachelor’s degree in forestry from an SAF‑accredited program preferred
Experience working directly with loggers, suppliers, or public‑sector forestry agencies preferred
Prior involvement with timber harvest planning and regulatory submissions preferred
