Police Officer Recruit – 17‑Week Mid‑Michigan Police Academy
Police Officer Recruit is for non‑certified applicants. Candidates who are hired will be sent to the 17‑week Mid‑Michigan Police Academy, a certified law enforcement academy located at Lansing Community College. Upon successful completion of this academy, the Recruit will be promoted to entry‑level police officer and must also successfully complete the Lansing Police Department’s field training officer program.
The Lansing Police Officer protects and serves the citizens and communities of the City of Lansing. Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of duties involving the enforcement of laws and the prevention of crimes; controls traffic flow and enforces state and local traffic regulations; issues citations; participates in and conducts a variety of criminal investigations; makes arrests; provides support and assistance to special crime prevention and law‑enforcement programs; and performs a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of law‑enforcement services and activities.
Requirements
Must be 21 years of age at the time of graduation from the academy
High School Diploma/GED
AND Associate Degree (preferred) OR completion of 24 semester credit (or term equivalency) hours of college‑level coursework (by the time of final offer of employment) OR current Military Commitment preparing their exit in Good Standing OR completion of commitment to the military in Good Standing. Some Military Course Credits may be used for equivalency.
A minimum of one (1) year or more equivalent life experience such as employment, internship, coaching, volunteerism, and/or etc.
Possess good moral character as determined by a favorable, comprehensive, and extensive background investigation covering school and employment records, home environment, and personal traits and integrity
Honorably discharged USA Armed Forces Veteran (copy of DD‑214 must be included in application packet), if apply
Available to work nights, weekends, holidays, and on an overtime basis
Must be a US Citizen at time of hire
Possess a valid Driver’s License at time of employment with a satisfactory driving record
Ability to pass a background investigation and no pending or past felony convictions
Ability to pass psychological evaluation
Meet physical standards as determined by the City’s Medical Doctor
Physical Requirements This position requires the individual to be able to perform the following actions: standing, walking, running, climbing, jumping, crawling, dragging heavy objects/persons, lifting, pulling, pushing, listening, speaking, twisting, turning, bending, crouching, hearing no lower than 35 dB HL in each ear, color vision, and visual acuity without correction must be at least 20/100 in each eye with a binocular vision of 20/100, correctable to at least 20/20 in each eye with lenses.

College transcripts and credits
Request official transcript in a sealed envelope mailed directly from the college to the City of Lansing Department of Human Resources or electronically through a secure website from the college or university.
Submit proof of request receipt with application packet.
Students must complete both the MCOLES Reading & Writing Test (Band A or B) and the MCOLES Physical Fitness Test within 180 days of the start of the academy. The Physical Fitness Test may not be scheduled or taken prior to March 1, 2026.
All application materials must be submitted electronically. No hand‑delivered applications will be accepted.
