Overview
Police Officer Recruit is for non-certified applicants. Candidates who are hired will be sent to the 17-week Mid-Michigan Police Academy, a certified law enforcement academy, located at Lansing Community College. Upon successful completion, the Recruit will be promoted to entry-level police officer and must complete the Lansing Police Department's field training officer program. The Lansing Police Officer protects and serves the citizens and communities of the City of Lansing under general supervision, performing a wide variety of duties involving the enforcement of laws and the prevention of crimes; controls traffic flow and enforces traffic regulations; participates in investigations; makes arrests; and supports crime prevention and other programs.
Responsibilities
Enforce laws and prevent crimes; control traffic flow and enforce state/local regulations; issue citations.
Participate in and conduct criminal investigations; make arrests; support special crime prevention programs.
Perform technical and administrative tasks in support of law enforcement services and activities.
Qualifications & Requirements
Must be 21 years of age at the time of graduation from the academy.
High School Diploma/GED; AND Associate Degree (preferred) OR completion of 24 semester credits OR current Military Commitment with good standing OR completion of military commitment. Some military course credits may be used for equivalency.
Minimum of one (1) year of life experience (employment, internship, coaching, volunteerism, etc.).
Possess good moral character as determined by a background investigation.
Honorably discharged USA Armed Forces Veteran (copy of DD-214) if applying.
Available to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
US Citizen at time of hire; valid Driver's License with satisfactory driving record.
Ability to pass background, psychological evaluation, and physical standards as determined by the City's Medical Doctor.
Meet physical standards as described by the City’s Medical Doctor.
Physical & Medical Requirements This position requires physical ability to stand, walk, run, climb, jump, crawl, lift, push, pull, hear, and see; normal color vision and binocular vision; and visual acuity without correction must meet specified standards. See job posting for full details.
