Purpose of Job
The purpose of this job is to assess and collect fees for landfill use. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, operating the scales, assessing and collecting fees, directing customers toward the appropriate landfill area, and performing additional tasks as assigned.

Work Schedule Monday - Thursday: 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. May be required to work on religious holidays. Regular and predictable attendance is required. Must work cooperatively with others.
When requirements include vehicle operation, responsible for the safety, readiness and operation of the vehicle and must abide by ACC's safe driving policy.
Minimum Training & Experience High school diploma or equivalent with one year of related experience required, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position. Must possess a valid driver's license.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Accepts user fees for each vehicle based upon the size of the vehicle and the type of material being hauled, using an electronic scale.
Advises customers of Landfill Rules and Regulations; responds to inquiries concerning these rules/regulations.
Operates directional signals to instruct customers when to drive onto the scales.
Directs customers to proper landfill area.
Maintains files on all charge tickets/accounts.
Ensures that random checks of vehicle loads are conducted.
Visually inspects loads for prohibited waste and reports violations immediately.
Processes State Environmental Protection required manifests for asbestos and other manifested loads.
Records and monitors vehicles for appropriate permits.
Ensures all vehicles weights.
Performs daily scale calibration of landfill scales with computer software.
Performs miscellaneous duties to include answering the telephone, unlocking gates and the office in the morning, securing the gates and the office in the evening, and maintaining a clean office environment.
Prepares daily bank deposit; transports daily revenues to the bank for deposit.
Researches and copies transactions for customers, upon request.
Assists in organizing and maintaining manuals; obtains and updates documents, policies, etc.
Prints out a daily computer report of cash and charge ticket totals (Daily History Detail report); prepares Daily Batch Scale Report; backs-up daily transactions on the computer.
Prepares tickets manually when scales are inoperable.
Assists in maintaining good customer relations.
Acts as attendant on call, in the absence of the weekend attendant.
Assists in maintaining the customer account and the vehicle permit lists.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the Solid Waste Department as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the position of Scale Operator.
Knowledge of the terminology used within the department.
Knowledge of vehicle manifests, billing statements, various reports, etc., and procedures and methods as required in the performance of duties.
Knowledge and ability to use computers.
Ability to compile, organize, prepare and maintain an assortment of records, reports, and information in an effective manner and according to departmental and/or governmental regulations.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to use independent judgment in routine and non-routine situations.
Ability to handle required calculations and experience in cash handling.
Ability to utilize and understand computer applications and techniques as necessary in the completion of daily assignments.
Ability to plan, organize and/or prioritize daily assignments and work activities.
Ability to comprehend and apply regulations and procedures of the department.
Physical Requirements Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including office equipment such as computers, adding machines, copy machines, etc. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. This position requires: walking, standing, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, seeing, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those of medium work.
