The Gaston County Tax Department's purpose is to accurately and impartially appraise all property in accordance with applicable state laws and to collect all ad valorem taxes. The Tax Department strives to be effective, efficient, and courteous to all customers and citizens of Gaston County.

Responsibilities

Physically visits property sites for the purpose of measuring dimensions & listing real property characteristics of both residential & commercial structures for tax assessment purposes. This requires work in all outdoor weather extremes.

Differentiates & identifies quality grade, depreciated physical condition, foundation type, roof type, interior/exterior wall type, number/type of rooms, heating/cooling system, types of building attachments, etc., of all real property structures encountered.

Must possess strong Customer Service/communication skills to assist Property Owners & others with inquiries regarding property listing data & assessed values.

Must have significant experience compiling information reports & testimony used to support assessed value appeals before the local Board of Equalization & Review. Experience with developing/presenting support materials & testimony for value appeals to the North Carolina Property Tax Commission.

Experience with Computer Aided Mass Appraisal (CAMA) software required. Experience with DevNet CAMA software is a significant plus. Must be able to research critical data & sketch structures within the CAMA system. Experience with supporting assessment programs such as GIS Mapping, Spatialest, Mobile Office, or equivalent programs.

Qualifications

IAAO designation with 6 years of progressive appraisal experience preferred.

High School Diploma or GED equivalency requires 6 years of progressive appraisal experience.

Associate degree with 6 years of progressive appraisal experience.

Must obtain Appraisal Certification through the North Carolina Department of Revenue within 2 years of hire.

A copy of the IAAO designation must be included with the application.

Must be able to meet and maintain expected production and accuracy levels, which is required for continued employment.

Must possess a valid Driver’s License and have a good driving record.

Must undergo a criminal background check and pass a drug screening test prior to employment.
