Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning Technician MSD of Warren Township is hiring a Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning Technician. This is a non‑exempt, hourly position with 261 work days annually, including paid holidays and paid vacation.

Classification & Work Hours FLSA Classification: Non‑exempt, hourly employee. Work Days: 261 days (including paid holidays and paid vacation). Standard Hours Per Day: 8 hours (not including a 30‑minute unpaid duty‑free meal break). Work Year: Begins on the first weekday in July and ends 12 months later on the last weekday in June.

Salary & Benefits The position is paid on the “Maintenance, Grounds, and Skilled Trades Personnel” salary schedule and is eligible for benefits on the “Support Staff” benefits schedule. Experience and certification levels are considered.

Reporting & Supervision Reports To: Assistant Director of Facilities Engineering. Supervises: No supervision of other employees.

General Summary of Duties Under general supervision, the HVAC Technician performs basic to semi‑skilled craft‑mechanical air conditioning systems work in various maintenance and service tasks for the school district. The role emphasizes learning from and providing assistance to other skilled trades personnel. Work areas include servicing air conditioning and refrigeration systems, treating and testing water cooling systems, preventive maintenance on system components, and setting and adjustment of feed and flow rates. The technician also performs skilled, industrial‑grade air conditioning and heating systems work, diagnosing and maintaining complex systems across the district, including large‑scale commercial units, chillers, and boilers.

Essential Functions

Perform basic to semi‑skilled craft‑mechanical air conditioning, water treatment, or refrigeration systems work in repair, maintenance, and service tasks for the district.

Assist with or maintain air conditioning, water treatment, or refrigeration components, controls, and systems as applicable.

Service or replace components such as screens, filters, switches, controllers, sensors, lines, pressure gauges, and valves.

Test water samples for accurate levels of chemicals and agents; set and adjust chemical feeds, flow rates, and pump controls accordingly.

Set, adjust, and calibrate equipment components, such as conductivity controller sensors and scales.

Perform preventive maintenance tasks according to established schedules; monitor systems to recognize potential problems and address them.

Ensure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, building, and safety standards regarding air conditioning and water treatment service and repair activities.

Work independently within scope of abilities or assist more knowledgeable technicians in complex repairs and installations.

Fill out and maintain work orders and purchase orders; maintain daily activity logs and associated data records for assigned systems.

Perform necessary calculations for setting and adjustment of controls, feed and flow rates, measuring conductivity, and measuring pipe dimensions, line layout, angles, and distances.

Clean and maintain equipment, tools, materials, and vehicles; ensure safe use and operation of all equipment.

Respond to emergency or critical incidents to contain, resolve, or prevent environmentally hazardous conditions.

Keep up to date on current technology and attend training as required to maintain skill level.

Maintain timely and accurate information for job responsibilities.

Use advanced knowledge of subcooling and superheat formulas to evaluate system efficiency and troubleshoot complex compressor or metering device issues.

Execute refrigerant recovery, evacuation, and recharging in compliance with EPA regulations, ensuring zero atmospheric release.

Conduct comprehensive leak searches on industrial‑sized units and perform necessary mechanical or soldered repairs.

Monitor and service high‑capacity chillers and boilers where applicable, ensuring efficient and safe seasonal transitions.

Serve as a subject matter expert, guiding less experienced maintenance staff on complex thermal issues.

Non‑essential Functions Perform related duties as directed.

Entry‑Level Requirements

Education/Training: High school diploma or GED required. Additional formal training in HVAC systems and water treatment repair preferred.

Experience: At least five years of previous air conditioning, water treatment, or refrigeration trades work experience required.

Certifications & Licenses: Training and certification in refrigerant handling and recovery required for air conditioning and refrigeration work; valid Indiana driver’s license required.

Physical, Sensory, and Environmental Requirements Physical: Ability to exert heavy physical effort, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, lift, carry, push, and/or pull heavy objects up to 100 pounds and occasionally heavier items. Sensory: Ability to perceive and discriminate colors, sounds, and depths; visual perception and discrimination are required. Environmental: Exposure to adverse conditions such as wetness, humidity, machinery, vibrations, temperature and noise extremes, electrical currents, varying lighting, and toxic or poisonous agents.
