All mechanics receive a $6.50 per hour stipend from the JCPS School Board (approved for the 2025–26 school year; reapproval by the board may occur for subsequent years).
Working Calendar 261 days per year; 8 hours per day.
Scope of Responsibilities Responds to the mechanical needs for vehicular preventive maintenance and breakdown repair. Must participate in continuing educational development to upgrade technical skills. Makes extensive and skillful repairs to all mechanical devices/parts of vehicles.
Positions and Salary
Mechanic A
Salary Schedule: 1B, Grade 10
Hourly range: $29.12 – $36.84 (includes $6.50 stipend)
Subject to experience verification
Mechanic B
Salary Schedule: 1B, Grade 8
Hourly range: $27.44 – $34.59 (includes $6.50 stipend)
Subject to experience verification
Mechanic C
Salary Schedule: 1B, Grade 7
Hourly range: $26.62 – $33.50 (includes $6.50 stipend)
Subject to experience verification
Minimum Qualifications (All Positions)
High School Diploma or G.E.D.
Working knowledge of gas and diesel buses, trucks, and cars
Effective communication skills
Minimum Qualifications for Mechanic A
Must have a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
Master Automotive Service Excellence certification (valid for life; no retest required)
Minimum Qualifications for Mechanic B
Two (2) years as a mechanic’s helper
Must have a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
Minimum Qualifications for Mechanic C
Technical vocational training or commensurate work experience
Ability to secure a CDL when eligible (21 years of age)
