About the Ashland Fire Department The Ashland Fire Department is an all hazards agency. Ashland firefighters provide structural firefighting, advanced life support emergency medical service, vehicle extrication, wildland firefighting, ice rescue and hazardous materials response. The Ashland Fire Department provides fire protection to the City of Ashland and 3 townships for a coverage area of 123 square miles. Emergency Medical Services are provided to the City of Ashland and 6 townships with a coverage area of 400 square miles. In addition, paramedic intercepts are provided to 10 EMT-Basic ambulance services. Ashland Fire also provides critical-care level interfacility transports from our local hospital to those with higher levels of care.
The Ashland Fire Department staffs one station and employs a Fire Chief, 24 full-time firefighters and 5 auxiliary EMTs. Each shift consists of a Captain/Paramedic, a Lieutenant/Paramedic, 4 Firefighter/Paramedics, and 2 Firefighter/EMTs.
The Position Under supervision of the Fire Lieutenant, the firefighter/paramedic shall provide the highest possible level of fire, rescue and pre-hospital emergency medical services (EMS) functions to include but not limited to: performing fire suppression, advanced life support emergency medical care, and other fire service related duties within the community, both locally and regionally.
This position works a modified California schedule averaging 56 hours per week that includes weekdays, weekends and holidays. Employees are allowed to trade shifts within the department’s liberal trade policy.
Qualifications
Valid National Registry EMT, Paramedic certification preferred.
Recent EMT or paramedic program graduates or those who will soon graduate are encouraged to apply.
Valid State of Wisconsin Paramedic License or ability to obtain a Wisconsin EMS license by date of hire.
State of Wisconsin/IFSAC Firefighter I preferred.
Those who are willing to attend firefighter training are encouraged to apply. We will train you!
Valid Driver’s License.
High School Diploma or GED/HSED.
Valid CPAT certificate preferred or completion of in house CPAT required within first year.
Desirable Qualifications
BLS or ALS EMS experience.
Wisconsin Critical Care Paramedic Endorsement.
Firefighter II (State of Wisconsin/IFSAC or equivalent).
Driver/Operator-Pumper (State of Wisconsin/IFSAC or equivalent).
Driver/Operator-Aerial (State of Wisconsin/IFSAC or equivalent).
Associate’s Degree in Fire Protection, Fire Science, Fire Medic, or Community Paramedicine.
Residency Requirements Within 12 months from hire date, the employee must reside within 45 minutes of the Ashland Fire Department.
Salary and Benefits FF/EMT $62,158.24 1st year compensation
FF/EMT $68,917.06 2nd year compensation
FF/Paramedic $67,562.60 1st year compensation
FF/Paramedic $74,335.46 2nd year compensation minimum

About the Area The City of Ashland is located on the shores of Lake Superior adjacent to the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. The region offers many year-round and seasonal activities.
Some of the outdoor activities include fishing, both Lake Superior and inland lakes, and hunting. The region offers miles of snowmobile and ATV/UTV trails for hours of enjoyment. Numerous hiking and mountain bike trails are located within the region. There are 21 waterfalls within 60 miles of Ashland, including the 8 highest waterfalls in the state.
A unique activity is "Book Across the Bay", an annual cross-country skiing and snowshoeing event where participants travel from Ashland to Washburn across the frozen Chequamegon Bay. Mount Ashwabay offers downhill and cross-country skiing in the winter and is home to Big Top Chautauqua, a unique outdoor concert venue.
The tourist communities of Bayfield and Madeline Island are a mere 30 minutes away. Both locations offer a number of dining and shopping opportunities. Bayfield is the home to Applefest, an annual festival to celebrate the region’s apple orchards. The Meyer’s Beach Sea Caves are located near Bayfield. Madeline Island has many beaches and offers a unique camping experience.
