Job Description and Duties Under the direction of the Area Senior Construction Engineer (a Senior Transportation Engineer), the incumbent will perform a wide variety of difficult and complex transportation engineering work. The incumbent serves as the licensed professional resident engineer on construction projects, assigns work, gives instructions, and makes decisions on difficult engineering and administrative problems in connection with directing work on various transportation projects. A valid Professional Engineering License (Civil) is required for a Range D appointment.
Special Requirements
Appointment to Range D requires a valid Professional Engineering License (Civil) issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. For all other ranges, a PE license is not required.
Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state‑owned or leased vehicle.
Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) required.
The Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) serves as documentation of each applicant's ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing. Resumes and cover letters do not substitute for the SOQ. The SOQ must be typed, no more than two pages in length, and 12‑point Arial font.
A maximum two‑page Statement of Qualifications that demonstrates how an applicant’s education, training, experience, and skills meet the criteria below is required. Use the bullet points below and directly address each topic:
Knowledge of:
Contract administration paperwork and documentation.
Caltrans Construction Manual, Standard Specifications and Special Provisions.
Highway and bridge construction, design engineering and cost estimating.
Ability to:
Administer construction contracts and interpret and enforce contract documents.
Serve as a lead worker, coordinate/assign work and provide direction to staff.
Communicate with contractors to provide direction and resolve conflicts.
Develop and maintain cooperative working relationships and be an effective team member.
Obtain or possess a CA Professional Engineer License (If not currently licensed, state if examinations have been started, or expected date to begin examinations).
