Responsibilities

Teach a full schedule of developmental and transfer‑level Child Development courses as assigned.

Assist in the planning, coordination, directing, and supervising the activities and staff of the Child Development Center.

Supervise the laboratory experience of child development students in a developmentally appropriate demonstration site environment for preschool and toddler age children.

Coordinate student observation and participation.

Develop program goals for children, parents, and students.

Administer the daily requirements of the Child Development Center.

Supervise the Child and Adult Care Food Program.

Administer all state, local, and federal categorical grant programs; prepare applications for child‑care funding and early child‑care and education program management.

Assure maintenance of a physical environment that conforms to the State Department of Social Services licensing standards of health and safety.

Conduct center inspections to assure compliance.

Communicate with parents, staff, and administrators related to center operations and student progress.

Discuss issues or concerns with parents.

Enroll children, maintain appropriate records in compliance with district requirements, licensing regulations, and other legal provisions.

Ensure availability of appropriate materials and equipment for staff and children’s use.

Learn and apply emerging technologies and advances, such as computer software applications, to perform duties efficiently.

Train, supervise, evaluate, and direct the work of the center staff.

Coordinate and support relationships for inclusion with collaborating onsite agencies.

Coordinate and conduct staff meetings and in‑service training.

Assist in the placement, guidance, and supervision of students from instructional programs.

Participate in appropriate professional development activities.

Participate in institutional activities including staff development.

Meet regularly with discipline/division peers.

Participate on community advisory committees related to early care and education initiatives.

Prepare grant proposals for external funding to support center operations.

Serve on and attend department, college, and district committees as needed.

Participate in program review, student learning outcome development, and assessment to improve student learning.

Teach assignments in a variety of instructional settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, online or off‑campus, and large‑group instruction classes; may include off‑campus instruction at local high schools for dual enrollment.

Fulfill all duties and responsibilities of instructors as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, and its relevance to equity‑minded practice within the classroom.

Master’s in child development, early childhood education, human development, home economics/family and consumer studies with a specialization in child development/early childhood education or educational psychology with a specialization in child development/early childhood education.

OR Bachelor’s in any of the above subjects and Master’s in social work, educational supervision, elementary education, special education, psychology, bilingual/bicultural education, life management/home economics, family life studies, or family and consumer studies.

OR a valid California Community College Credential.

OR the equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency).

Special requirements: a California Child Development Program’s Director’s Permit or the ability to obtain a permit within six months of hire.

Desirable Qualifications

Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility.

Recent experience working with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion shape participation and outcomes.

Willingness to examine and remediate instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students.

Related work and professional experience.

Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds, including disabled students.

Proficient in computers and other technologies used to provide high‑quality instruction and support to students.

Effective communication skills with students and staff.

Knowledge of the community college mission and goals.

Experience teaching and administering in licensed early‑care and education programs.

Knowledge of child development, early childhood curriculum, inclusive practice, teaching methods and techniques.

Knowledge or certification in online teaching.

Knowledge of applicable state licensing regulations, child‑care food programs, health and safety regulations, and categorical grant programs.

Knowledge and experience with Program for Infant Toddler Care (PITC), NAEYC Accreditation, and community care licensing.

Ability to navigate agreements with collaborating agencies.

Knowledge of multilingual learner strategies for young children and adults.

Knowledge of the CLASS observation tool.

Knowledge and experience administering California Department of Social Services programs (CSPP, CCTR).

Experience collaborating with community partners.

Conditions of Employment 210 duty days per year. Duty days prorated based on start of assignment. Salary and benefits: starting annual salary $71,054 – $108,772 depending on education and experience. Annual doctoral stipend $2,419 available. Fringe benefits include medical, dental, vision coverage for employee and dependents, life insurance. Employee is a member of CalSTRS.

Selection Procedure and Interviews Applications screened by Human Resources for completeness and minimum qualifications. From qualified applicants, a selection advisory committee reviews candidates based on minimum and desirable qualifications and selects those invited to interview.

Interview committee rates responses, teaching demonstration, and writing prompt. Small number of applicants selected as recommended candidates forwarded to Vice President and College President for final interviews. Hiring recommendation forwarded to Board of Trustees for final approval.
