Job Description:
The School of Life Sciences (SOLS) Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) seeks a strategic, experienced, and collaborative Senior Instructional Designer to lead instructional design efforts that support faculty, teaching assistants, and instructional staff across a large and dynamic academic unit. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Instructional Design, this position provides instructional design and learning technology mentorship within a collaborative team structure as part of a small, high-performing unit.
The Senior Instructional Designer will support both day-to-day instructional needs and large-scale curriculum and pedagogical initiatives across immersion and online environments. This role is expected to take ownership of key projects, ranging from faculty development to course design, based on institutional priorities and the individual's strengths and expertise. Areas of focus may include faculty onboarding, peer review and formative teaching development programming, and curriculum initiatives tied to high-enrollment gateway courses, accessibility, and student success. The Senior Instructional Designer will also contribute to collaborative projects with The College, EdPlus, and university-wide innovation efforts.
Salary Range:
$66,200

Essential Duties: Lead the design, development, and revision of high-quality courses across modalities (online and in-person), in alignment with department, university, and national standards. Provide high-level instructional consultation to faculty and teaching teams, including guidance on learning objectives, assessments, inclusive design, and learning technologies. Collaborate to support course redesign, accessibility remediation, and curriculum-wide alignment efforts. Support pilots and partnerships of tools such as Dreamscape Learn, Digit, and AI-powered learning support. Mentor and provide feedback to junior instructional designers and associates on pedagogical strategy, quality assurance, and accessibility. Work in partnership with faculty, instructional teams, and graduate students to maintain accessible, scalable course design practices. Collaborate on the design and upkeep of self-service faculty resources through the unit website and other platforms. Serve as the primary coordinator for faculty onboarding, helping new instructors acclimate to ASU systems, pedagogy, and support structures. Iteratively revise and maintain peer review processes, documentation, and support materials to support and scale programming for SOLS' formative teaching observations. Contribute to the broader university instructional design community and remain current with trends in digital pedagogy, inclusive design, and educational technology.
Desired Qualifications: Master's degree in instructional design, education, or a related field. Demonstrated experience supporting faculty in higher education, ideally within STEM disciplines. Experience leading or significantly contributing to new faculty onboarding and professional development initiatives. Experience with Canvas LMS and tools such as Google Workspace Familiarity with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and experience in accessibility remediation. Strong written and interpersonal communication skills; ability to consult, coach, and support a diverse instructional community. Proven ability to manage complex instructional projects and competing deadlines. Experience working within or across academic units with distributed instructional teams and large student populations. Demonstrated experience mentoring junior designers or instructional support staff.
Working Environment: This position is based on the ASU Tempe campus with some flexibility for remote work after successful onboarding. The role requires regular collaboration with faculty and academic staff and may involve occasional evening or weekend support during peak periods (e.g., start of term). Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone, and associated computer/technology peripherals
