Job Description

POSITION OBJECTIVE

Reporting to the Dean for Undergraduate Advising, the Director of Education Abroad will lead the Office of Education Abroad at Case Western Reserve University as it continues to develop into a nationally recognized leader in education abroad. The director will have the vision, experience and implementation skills to effectively design, promote and coordinate innovative and accessible education abroad programs for students, including but not limited to faculty-led short-term programs: semester, academic year, and summer programs, and the CWRU In¿ first semester study abroad programs. The director will work closely with faculty and staff on campus to develop collaborative relationships, aligning the goals of education abroad with academic departments to create a culture of education abroad. The director will also keep informed of the latest trends and best practices related to education abroad, being engaged in appropriate professional organizations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Lead the Office of Education Abroad by designing and implementing a strategic vision for education abroad at Case Western Reserve University, with clear goals of increasing education abroad accessibility to all undergraduate and graduate students. Develop and implement a marketing and outreach strategy and assessment plan to monitor and track success. Oversee the education abroad budget and demonstrate fiscal responsibility in the use of university resources. Seek additional capacity and scholarship funding to grow the university's education abroad programs. (25%) Develop and sustain a rich portfolio of high-quality education abroad opportunities for all students, working with providers, exchange partners, and other international institutions to create a variety of programs that map on to existing university curriculum. Collaborate with university faculty and staff on educational course development, including course design logistics, budget, and risk management. Chair the Education Abroad Advisory Council to guide and enhance the portfolio of programs and education abroad policies and process, including the course and credit approval process. (25%) Supervise a team of education abroad professionals as they advise students on study abroad opportunities, develop faculty-led programs, and support students in all phases of the study abroad process, including, but not limited to, pre-departure, while abroad, and returning home. (20%) Enhance and develop the ¿CWRU in¿ first semester study abroad program, in coordination with partners on campus and abroad. (20%) Collaborate in the development and implementation of appropriate risk management policies and procedures for students studying abroad. ( 7 %) NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

CONTACTS

Department: Daily leadership and support of education abroad staff.

University: Frequent contact with Undergraduate Advising Support, Financial Aid, the Registrar's Office, and other administrative offices on campus to ensure that students can go abroad and develop appropriate procedures to aid their transitions. Frequent contact with faculty advisors across campus to facilitate credit transfer and support faculty in developing study abroad programs. Regular contact with dean's offices across campus to develop faculty led programs, confirm course approvals for transfer credit and coordinate student risk management concerns. Occasional contact with the Office of General Counsel to develop partnership agreements and manage international risk.

External: Communicate regularly with international partners to facilitate education abroad opportunities. Regular contact with parents and family members regarding education abroad. Occasional contact with education abroad offices at other universities to collaborate and share opportunities and challenges.

Students: Daily interaction with undergraduate, graduate, and professional school students for individual advising and group presentations/ workshops.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has direct supervision of two full time education abroad staff and multiple students.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: 5 to 8 years of professional full-time experience working within education abroad or related field.

Education: Master's degree required.

REQUIRED SKILLS

Extensive experience in program planning and implementation, program evaluation and assessment. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a broad range of students and is committed to fostering a respectful and supportive learning environment that promotes academic success for all. Ability to work with minimum supervision and to work simultaneously on several tasks. Knowledge and appreciation of cultural differences. Experience living overseas highly desirable. Demonstrated interpersonal/group relations skills. Good problem-solving and organizational skills. Advanced knowledge of database programs, Microsoft Windows and other software applications. Knowledge of Terra Dotta software preferred. Demonstrated history of successful support, education, and advocacy for all students, aligned with the values, mission, and messaging of the university, while adhering to the staff policy on conflict of commitment and interest. Ability to meet consistent attendance. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Normal office working environment with some travel may be required.
