who will take ownership of our safety and health programs. This is a highly visible role that directly impacts our people, projects, and culture. The right fit for this position: The ideal candidate is a self-starter who thrives in an autonomous role yet understands the importance of collaboration. This role will work closely with Preconstruction, Operations, and HR to integrate safety into all phases of our projects and our company culture. You will build trust with field teams, bringing firsthand construction experience (ideally in the electrical trade) to the table, and partner with leadership to ensure safety remains a shared priority across the company. You are passionate about keeping people safe — not by sitting behind a desk, but by being out on the job sites (about 75% of your time) identifying risks, coaching crews, and fostering a proactive safety culture. This is not an entry-level role. You’ll bring field experience, a solid understanding of OSHA requirements, and the confidence to lead safety initiatives without needing micromanagement. Responsibilities: Jobsite Safety Leadership – Spend the majority of your time on job sites, observing work, identifying hazards, and coaching crews on safe practices. Program Development & Compliance – Maintain and improve Carlton Electric’s safety and health programs; ensure compliance with OSHA and other applicable regulations. Manage all required reporting, documentation, and recordkeeping. Training & Education – Conduct new hire safety orientations, lead engaging safety trainings (including OSHA 10/30 courses, CPR/First Aid certifications, and lift operator trainings), create and distribute toolbox talks, and perform additional training when certifications expire and/or as needed. Safety Program Tracking – Maintain and track safety certifications, toolbox talk completion, safety inspections, job hazard analyses (JHAs), and other site safety reporting. Incident & Workers’ Compensation Management – Manage workers’ compensation claims, investigate incidents, and develop corrective action plans. Represent Carlton Electric at captive insurance group meetings (2x per year), sharing best practices, lessons learned, and injury data with partner companies. Fleet Safety – Oversee the company’s fleet safety program, including driver eligibility, and manage the dash cam/telematics systems (Motive and Samba Safety). Assign corrective driver training as needed and ensure compliance with all safety and vehicle standards. Pre-Construction Involvement – Participate in pre-job planning, job take-off meetings, and GC/subcontractor safety walks. Safety Award Submissions – Complete and submit safety award nominations on behalf of Carlton Electric (IECRM, AGC, CSEA, etc.) and attend related events as needed. Cross-Department Collaboration – Partner closely with Preconstruction, Operations, and HR to integrate safety into planning, execution, and workforce strategies. Relationship Building – Build strong relationships with field crews, general contractors, and subcontractors to reinforce safety as a shared priority. Qualifications: Required: 5+ years of construction safety experience (electrical industry experience strongly preferred). Hands-on field experience (ideally as an electrician, electrical apprentice, or similar role). In-depth knowledge of OSHA standards and construction safety best practices. Proven ability to lead safety initiatives. Strong written and verbal communication skills for clear reporting, training, and collaboration. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and ability to navigate technology effectively, including leveraging AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT) for drafting reports, award submissions, and training materials. Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Construction Management, or a related field. OSHA 30, CHST, or other safety certifications. OSHA 500 Trainer Certification (or willingness to obtain). CPR/First Aid Instructor and Lift Train-the-Trainer certifications. Experience in a safety leadership role within the electrical contracting industry. Reporting : The Safety Manager reports to the CEO. Physical Demands: Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and maneuver on ladders for prolonged periods. Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds. Sufficient vision, hearing, and communication skills (with or without correction) to perform essential job functions. Ability to think clearly, make sound decisions, and manage stress effectively while meeting deadlines and objectives. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this job. Working Conditions: Primary work environment: Approximately 75% on active construction sites (indoor and outdoor) and 25% in an office setting. Site travel: Frequent travel to job sites across the Colorado Front Range (from Colorado Springs to Fort Collins), though travel may extend beyond depending on job sites. Variable conditions: Work may be performed in hot, cold, wet, muddy, humid, windy, or otherwise challenging weather and terrain. Elevated/restricted work: Ability to work at heights (ladders, aerial lifts) and in confined spaces (crawl spaces, vaults, trenches, manholes, etc.). Personal protective equipment (PPE): Required at all times on job sites, including safety boots, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, and hearing protection. Overnight Travel: Occasional short-duration trips (2–4 per year) for captive insurance meetings, safety award events, or related industry functions. Schedule flexibility: Potential for support needed outside of working hours such as for overnight shutdowns or weekend work. Noise & environment: Exposure to typical office noise levels and varying job site environments. Compensation Package: Location: Denver, Colorado – approximately 75% of time on job sites.
