Mainframe Systems Engineer Job Description

Requirements Must be a U.S. Citizen Ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance and eligibility for a Secret clearance Remote position with occasional onsite meetings in the DMV area Qualifications and Experience
Bachelor's Degree with 5+ years of relevant experience, or 12+ years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree Extensive knowledge of z/OS Mainframe operations, including proficiency with MVS/JES/USS Commands, WLM, JCL, REXX, CLIST, SDSF, TSO/ISPF, IPCS, Unix, STC's, batch processing, and gathering documentation for IBM support Skilled in using z/OS mainframe tools such as LRS VPS/DRS, MVS Quick Ref, Connect Direct, TN3270 (Rumba & Reflection), and FTP Client Software Familiarity with mainframe hardware and software upgrade processes Experience in z/OS mainframe Disaster Recovery, including fail-over and fail-back operations to/from a DR site Proven ability to collaborate with IBM developers and software vendors to address software errors and performance issues Knowledge of auditing requirements Strong problem-solving skills with expertise in Root Cause Analysis for system issues Excellent written and verbal communication skills Ability to work autonomously and manage competing priorities effectively Responsibilities
Oversee and maintain all mainframe system operations Install, configure, and upgrade mainframe software and hardware to ensure operational continuity Monitor and analyze system performance, recommending and implementing optimizations Conduct routine system checks, troubleshoot issues, and resolve faults promptly Develop and document procedures for managing mainframe software and systems Work closely with IT teams to ensure seamless integration of hardware and software systems Manage system backups and establish robust data recovery protocols Provide technical support and guidance to users on mainframe operations Maintain detailed documentation of system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting guides Ensure system security by applying the latest updates, patches, and security standards Develop and maintain disaster recovery procedures for mainframe systems Collaborate with developers and analysts to resolve application and system issues Participate in an on-call rotation, supporting extended hours, weekends, and emergencies as needed Document system changes and maintain accurate configuration records Stay current with emerging mainframe technologies and industry advancements
