Position Overview:
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly environment in school buildings and surrounding grounds. This includes routine cleaning, minor maintenance, and support for school events. The position requires the use of cleaning equipment, hand tools, and prescribed chemicals under limited supervision. Custodians play a key role in supporting the overall well-being of students, staff, and visitors by promoting health and safety across the school campus.
Key Responsibilities:
Daily Cleaning & Sanitation-
Clean classrooms, hallways, offices, restrooms, and other assigned areas.
Perform tasks such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and emptying trash.
Sanitize restrooms, drinking fountains, glass surfaces, and high-touch areas.
Restock paper products, soap, and other supplies.
Maintenance & Special Projects-
Replace light bulbs and filters; perform minor maintenance tasks (e.G., painting, basic plumbing).
Assist with seasonal floor care: strip, seal, buff, and recoat tile; extract and spot-clean carpets.
Help monitor HVAC systems, freezers, coolers, and other school equipment.
Tend to building systems (furnace, air conditioning, boilers, etc.) to ensure proper functionality.
Event & Facility Support-
Set up for school functions, meetings, and special events.
Move furniture, receive and store deliveries.
Open or secure buildings, including after-hours or weekends as needed.
Grounds & Outdoor Work-
Maintain building perimeter and school grounds: sweep walkways, mow grass, shovel snow, and care for landscaping.
Inspect and maintain playgrounds and outdoor equipment.
Health & Safety-
Respond quickly to spills, accidents, or safety hazards.
Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow safe work practices.
Report safety concerns or incidents promptly to administration or Head Custodian.
Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Ability to learn and apply proper cleaning methods and equipment use.
Capable of understanding and following oral and written instructions.
Strong interpersonal skills; able to work well with others and demonstrate a service-oriented attitude.
Self-motivated with the ability to prioritize tasks and work independently.
Education & Experience-
High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Prior custodial or maintenance experience is a plus, but not required.

Maintain appropriate boundaries with students and demonstrate professional behavior at all times.
Comply with all division policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
Physical Requirements:
Frequent walking, standing, lifting (up to 25 lbs frequently and 75 lbs occasionally).
Tasks may involve bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, pulling, and reaching.
Work may be performed indoors and outdoors, in varying weather and temperature conditions.
Exposure to cleaning chemicals and potentially hazardous substances is expected.
Must be able to communicate effectively, hear verbal instructions, and see clearly to complete tasks and assess surroundings.
Working Relationships:
Daily interaction with students, teachers, administrators, staff, and the public.
Expected to be a courteous and professional representative of the school division.
