Position Overview:nThe Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly environment in school buildings and surrounding grounds. This includes routine cleaning, minor maintenance, and support for school events. The position requires the use of cleaning equipment, hand tools, and prescribed chemicals under limited supervision. Custodians play a key role in supporting the overall well-being of students, staff, and visitors by promoting health and safety across the school campus.nKey Responsibilities:nDaily Cleaning & Sanitation-nClean classrooms, hallways, offices, restrooms, and other assigned areas.nPerform tasks such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and emptying trash.nSanitize restrooms, drinking fountains, glass surfaces, and high-touch areas.nRestock paper products, soap, and other supplies.nMaintenance & Special Projects-nReplace light bulbs and filters; perform minor maintenance tasks (e.G., painting, basic plumbing).nAssist with seasonal floor care: strip, seal, buff, and recoat tile; extract and spot-clean carpets.nHelp monitor HVAC systems, freezers, coolers, and other school equipment.nTend to building systems (furnace, air conditioning, boilers, etc.) to ensure proper functionality.nEvent & Facility Support-nSet up for school functions, meetings, and special events.nMove furniture, receive and store deliveries.nOpen or secure buildings, including after-hours or weekends as needed.nGrounds & Outdoor Work-nMaintain building perimeter and school grounds: sweep walkways, mow grass, shovel snow, and care for landscaping.nInspect and maintain playgrounds and outdoor equipment.nHealth & Safety-nRespond quickly to spills, accidents, or safety hazards.nUse appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow safe work practices.nReport safety concerns or incidents promptly to administration or Head Custodian.nQualifications:nKnowledge, Skills & AbilitiesnAbility to learn and apply proper cleaning methods and equipment use.nCapable of understanding and following oral and written instructions.nStrong interpersonal skills; able to work well with others and demonstrate a service-oriented attitude.nSelf-motivated with the ability to prioritize tasks and work independently.nEducation & Experience-nHigh school diploma or equivalent preferred.nPrior custodial or maintenance experience is a plus, but not required.nCharacter & Conduct Expectations-nMust possess strong moral character and serve as a positive role model in accordance with Rockingham County Public Schools Pillars of Character.nMaintain appropriate boundaries with students and demonstrate professional behavior at all times.nComply with all division policies, procedures, and safety regulations.nPhysical Requirements:nFrequent walking, standing, lifting (up to 25 lbs frequently and 75 lbs occasionally).nTasks may involve bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, pulling, and reaching.nWork may be performed indoors and outdoors, in varying weather and temperature conditions.nExposure to cleaning chemicals and potentially hazardous substances is expected.nMust be able to communicate effectively, hear verbal instructions, and see clearly to complete tasks and assess surroundings.nWorking Relationships:nDaily interaction with students, teachers, administrators, staff, and the public.nExpected to be a courteous and professional representative of the school division.
