One of the best ways to learn about State government is through a State Senate internship program. An important role of a district office is to keep the local community connected with the legislative work taking place in the State Senate in Sacramento. This is accomplished through community based events, constituent correspondence, and everyday involvement with the community of the 22nd Senate District. As a district office intern, you will have an exciting opportunity to learn about the inner-workings of a dynamic government office, as well as gain valuable insight into a future career in public service, and learn about issues impacting California's 22nd Senate District. BASIC FUNCTIONS: In a learner capacity and under the direct supervision of the District Director, the District Intern will be responsible for general office duties including monitoring and responding to the public inbox for the Member, processing incoming mail, answer incoming calls, greet visitors to the District Office, learn how to create certificates of recognition and shadow District Representatives at meetings and events to support the Senator. Applicants must be organized, detailed, and able to work well with others.
DUTIES: In a learner capacity and under the direct supervision of the District Director, the ideal candidate will be able to work in a fast-paced, professional environment and assist with constituent services and casework as needed. The candidate will learn about the Legislative Information System (LIS) and utilize LIS to research a bill in their interest area. The ideal candidate will learn the legislative process and be asked to prepare a presentation briefing on what they learned at the conclusion of their internship.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS: Strong oral and written communication skills are essential in addition to proficiency with Microsoft Office and PCs. Familiarity with legislative culture and process is preferred. Candidates be an undergraduate student currently enrolled in a community college or University, and proof of current student status will be required upon acceptance into the program. A successful candidate must be able to commit to atleast 15 hours per week during Monday - Friday, 9:00am - 5:00pm for the duration of the internship program.
LOCATION, SALARY AND FILING DATE: This position is located in Ontario CA or West Covina, CA. The Senate's core business hours are 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, scheduling for interns may need to be more flexible depending on the office needs. Salary is $20 per hour. No benefits provided with this classification. Successful interns have the opportunity to receive a letter of recommendation, and explore a potential career in public service and be able to gain insights from staff about this dynamic and impactful career field.
