Systems & Network Administrator
Across our eight campuses and the district office, this role provides full coverage of infrastructure, cybersecurity, server and network management, cloud services, and user account administration.
The scope of the role directly supports our 1:1 deployment. Oversees key learning platforms, and manages core district systems with clear accountability. Additionally, this approach aligns with North Carolina Digital Leadership guidelines, which support role blending where appropriate, particularly in PSUs with limited staffing.
Purpose:
The Systems & Network Administrator is responsible for the design, implementation, monitoring and maintenance of computer network and server hardware, software, and communication systems across eight schools and the county office. This position ensures stability, security, and performance of network infrastructure including switches, wireless, firewalls, routers, and bridges, along with maintaining physical, cloud-based servers and services. This position will manage accounts and ensure reliability, security, and recovery of system and user data by implementing and maintaining security protocols such as wireless encryption, authentication, and authorization.
Duties and Responsibilities Monitors and manages network ensuring performance and security Maintains infrastructure systems by patching and upgrading firmware Monitors Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) alerts for products and services in use and takes appropriate action Designs and implements wireless network infrastructure Maintains documentation of network configuration, operating procedures and policies Assists in Disaster Recovery planning and testing Ensures technology purchases are compliant with local, state, and federal guidelines Rostering, provisioning, authentication, and auditing of user accounts. Manages software including operating system, email, instructional, and associated applications on servers and workstations Installs and maintains server and appliance hardware. Recommends hardware based on capacity and performance requirements. Maintains cloud services such as email and instructional web applications focusing on reliability and privacy of user data Manages and tests software upgrades to minimize impact and ensure compatibility Maintains backup and recovery procedures and verifies it is working properly Assists in management of CIPA compliant content filtering for the PSU Works with 3rd party vendors ensuring compliance with NCDPI student data security standards Coordinates E-Rate application process to secure federal funding for connectivity initiatives Provides support of the 1:1 deployment for MacBooks, iPads, and Windows PCs for approximately 1,850 students and 275 staff Ownership of Device Management Systems (MDM), Educational Workspace and email systems, and Network/Cybersecurity configuration and monitoring systems Development, planning, and execution of technology roadmaps and masterplans for school system networks, servers, 1:1 devices, and software Development and maintenance of system technical documentation, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), and disaster recovery procedures Attends classes, seminars, and conferences to enhance knowledge of trends and developments related to network systems. Provides an example or trains other technical staff on operating procedures necessary to maintain proper inventory records and facilitate timely work order responses. Strong knowledge of network architecture A deep knowledge of application transport and network infrastructure protocols Strong knowledge of wireless architecture including design, implementation, and maintenance. Solid knowledge of firewall concepts, configurations, and policies Strong knowledge of network operating systems General knowledge of applicable federal laws such as COPPA, CIPA and FERPA Solid knowledge of the capabilities and limitations of servers and storage Strong knowledge of user management systems and techniques including Active Directory and Group Policy Working knowledge of system security concepts such as least privilege, backup/recovery, endpoint detection, and log analysis Strong knowledge of capabilities and limitations of servers and storage Strong knowledge of a variety of network, server, and device operational problem determination procedures, techniques, and troubleshooting Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of progressive experience in systems and network technology support roles; or Associate degree in computer science or an IT related field or a closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of progressive experience in systems and network technology support roles; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Technical certifications in Microsoft, Google, Vmware, are preferred.
