The Mass Spectrometry Specialist will support chemical sample analysis operations in COSMIC laboratory and perform mass spectrometry analysis of chemical samples. The Mass Spectrometry Specialist will be responsible for overseeing, coordinating, and conducting analyses involving various projects in the areas of mass spectrometry and mass spectrometry-based quantitative and qualitative analyses within the COSMIC Facility at ODU. The individual will participate in i) initial project analytical planning and experimental design with investigators from ODU and outside institutions, ii) developing sample preparation and MS/MS analytical protocols, iii) statistical analysis of data, iv) assessing and modifying mass spectrometry hardware, v) preparing reports using data science notebooks, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, pathway analysis, etc., and vi) working with and developing new and existing clients, and helping faculty with research and proposals. Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field is required. Considerable knowledge and ability to use chemical lab equipment. Knowledge of basic chemical principles such as organic structure, reactions, protein structure, biochemical processes, and basic physical chemical principles. Basic knowledge of statistical principles of measurement and error analysis used to evaluate and refine techniques to a level of analytical competency. Basic knowledge of molecular fragmentation in an energy source, and the ability to interpret mass spectrometry data. Basic knowledge of HPLC, electrospray ionization, and ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry techniques. Effective oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to handle pressurized and liquid gases. Demonstrated ability to carry out cryogen fills for mass spectrometry and NMR instruments. Significant direct experience handling chemicals and making chemical solutions, including serial dilutions. Significant experience with mass spectrometry analysis in a detail-oriented analytical lab setting required. Direct experience maintaining high vacuum and/or high magnetic field mass spectrometry instrumentation, especially pump maintenance, and cryogen fills. Additional Considerations: PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field. Direct experience using HPLC, electrospray ionization, and ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry techniques preferred.
