Essential Position Functions

Plan, organize, and implement youth sports camps on non-school days in alignment with the District 196 calendar. Develop daily camp schedules, activities, and lesson plans appropriate for a variety of ages and skill levels. Set up, maintain, and clean up sports equipment and activity areas before, during, and after camp sessions. Supervise and provide direction to Recreation Leaders and coordinate with the Recreation Team Lead to ensure effective camp operations. Serve as the on-site lead during camp hours, addressing parent/guardian questions, participant needs, and staff coordination. Monitor participant behavior and engagement to ensure a safe, inclusive, and positive camp environment. Communicate effectively with staff, parents, and coordinator regarding schedules, incidents, and general camp updates. Enforce safety procedures and respond appropriately to emergencies, accidents, or behavior issues. Assist with staff scheduling and training as needed. Maintain accurate attendance records, incident reports, and program evaluations. Perform other related duties as assigned to support youth programming at the Eagan Community Center.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be at least 18 years of age. Valid Driver’s License High school diploma or G.E.D. One year of experience working with youth in a recreational, educational, or athletic setting. Experience planning and organizing activities or programs. Current CPR and First Aid certification or ability to obtain upon hire. Must pass a criminal background check.

Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree (or progress toward one) in Recreation, Education, Sports Management, Kinesiology, or a related field. Two or more years of experience working with youth in a camp, recreation, or educational setting. Prior experience supervising part-time staff or volunteers. Knowledge of youth sports rules, drills, and age-appropriate instruction methods. Strong organizational skills with experience creating schedules, lesson plans, or program materials. Ability to respond calmly and effectively in emergency or high-stress situations. Experience working in a community center, parks and recreation department, or municipal government setting.

Youth development principles and their application in recreational settings. Age-appropriate youth sports rules, drills, and instructional methods. Safety rules, emergency procedures, and behavior management techniques. Basic Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and scheduling or registration software.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Supervising and motivating part-time staff and volunteers. Planning, organizing, and implementing structured recreational activities. Verbal and written communication with diverse audiences, including parents, staff, and participants. Time management, task prioritization, and adapting to changing program needs.

Ability To

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as part of a team. Demonstrated ability to lead group activities and manage youth behavior in a positive, constructive manner Lead and maintain a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment for youth participants. Enforce rules and guidelines in a firm, fair, and positive manner. Remain calm and professional in high-stress or emergency situations. Work independently and collaboratively as part of a team. Maintain a positive and professional demeanor in a fast-paced environment. Work flexible hours, including early mornings, afternoons, and full days during seasonal camps.

Supervision

Program Assistant may provide work direction to other seasonal/temporary staff, volunteers, and participants on behalf of supervisory staff.

Physical Requirements

While performing duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, bend, talk, and hear Frequently lift and /or move up to 50 pounds Specific vision abilities include close vision, distant vision, color vision, and peripheral vision.

Working Conditions

FLSA non-exempt position, with hours varying between 5-29 hours per week depending on season. Work is performed primarily indoors in the office, gymnasium or community center setting. Occasional exposure to moderate noise and frequent participant interaction. Flexible hours may include daytime, early evening, or weekend sessions. Ability to work non-school days, including potential full-day hours during summer camps.
