Director of Embedded Software Engineering (Hands-On)

Location: Santa Barbara, CA - please note this role is 5 days per week on site. Relocation assistance is offered.

Compensation: Up to $240,000 + stock options, healthcare, dental, and vision

A leading company in the space and defense sector is seeking a Director of Embedded Software Engineering to lead and scale a growing team of engineers working on mission-critical systems. This is a hands-on leadership role , ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, high-impact environment and wants to be closely involved in technical development while also guiding and mentoring a team, the team build in Rust, but we're open to an Embedded C/C++ background .

You will be responsible for both technical direction and people leadership , working alongside world-class engineers to design, develop, and deploy embedded software for next-generation aerospace and defense systems.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead and mentor a team of embedded software engineers across multiple projects
• Drive architecture and development of embedded software in C, C++, or Rust with a demonstrable desire to work in Rust.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams including hardware, systems, and program management
• Establish best practices for code quality, testing, and system reliability
• Contribute directly to codebases and critical design decisions

Requirements:

• Proven experience leading and growing engineering teams in an embedded systems environment
• Strong background in C, C++, or Rust with hands-on development experience in recent roles.
• Previous work in aerospace, defense, or high-reliability systems preferred
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to operate at both strategic and tactical levels
• US citizenship or Green Card required due to the nature of the work.
