JOB TITLE: Painter
FLSA CLASSIFICATION: Non-exempt, hourly employee.
WORK DAYS: 261 days per year (including paid holidays and paid vacation time).
STANDARD HOURS PER DAY: 8 hours per day (not including a 30-minute unpaid duty-free meal break). Occasional mandatory overtime is possible.
WORK YEAR: The work year for the Painter begins on the first weekday in July, and ends 12 months later on the last weekday in June.
SALARY SCHEDULE & BENEFITS: The Painter is paid on the "Maintenance, Grounds, and Skilled Trades Personnel" salary schedule, and is eligible for benefits on the "Support Staff" benefits schedule. Starting hourly rate is $21.71.
REPORTS TO: The Painter reports to the Assistant Director.
SUPERVISES: The Painter does not supervise any other employee(s).
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: The Painter is responsible for performing a variety of painting and surface preparation tasks to maintain and improve the appearance and protection of buildings, structures, and equipment. This position ensures that painting projects are completed efficiently, safely, and to high-quality standards in accordance with work orders and maintenance schedules. Performs related work as directed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Performs semi-skilled to skilled painting and related tasks in all areas, safely.
  2. Performs necessary calculations in preparing surfaces and mediums for use, i.e., mixing proportions, measuring angles and distances, calculating square footage.
  3. Performs surface preparation and preventive maintenance according to assigned schedules or when directed, i.e., repainting faded walls, filling cracks and holes, sanding and repainting peeling areas.
  4. Applies mediums including, but not necessarily limited to, glazes, primers, stains, sealers, and varnishes.
  5. Operates assigned vehicle and various hand-held manual, electrical, and gas-powered tools and equipment, i.e., mixers, sprayers, rollers, caulking guns, scrapers, sand blasters, pressure washers, safely.
  6. Erect scaffolding, ladders, and other tools safely to reach high areas.
  7. Inspects job sites to determine color mixing and matching needs, and quantities of materials required per work orders. After work is completed, inspections for completeness and accuracy of job requested are conducted.
  8. Performs routine cleaning and maintenance of assigned equipment, tools, materials, and vehicles to ensure safe and efficient operating conditions, compliance with established department policy, and sound trade practices.
  9. Performs various record maintenance duties where applicable, i.e., ordering materials and supplies, work orders and service records, materials and supplies utilized, cost estimates, vendor billing invoices.
  10. Coordinate work orders with school calendars as applicable.
  11. Recognizes and addresses or reports any potential/detected deterioration, repair, and maintenance needs to the supervisor.
  12. Functions independently, as assigned, or as part of a work crew in completing project/work orders as necessary.
  13. Responsible for keeping up to date on current technology, as job appropriate, being used by Warren.
  14. With the support of the district, attends training to ensure skill level in various technologies is at the level required to perform in the current position.
  15. Responsible for maintaining timely and accurate information, they hold as part of their job responsibilities.
  16. The painter is considered an essential worker; during inclement weather, they are part of the Snow Removal Detail Team.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.
  1. Performs related duties as directed.
ENTRY-LEVEL REQUIREMENTS:
1. EDUCATION/TRAINING: High school diploma or GED is required.
2. EXPERIENCE: At least three years of progressively skilled and knowledgeable experience in painting trades work, including experience in the skilled application of a wide variety of paint mediums (e.g., varnishes, glazes, stains, and primers), is required.
3. CERTIFICATIONS &/OR LICENSES:
  1. Requires obtaining and maintaining a valid state driver's license.
  2. Completion of OSHA 10 training within the first 30 days of employment
  3. Obtaining and maintaining certification on scissor and boom lifts within 90 days of employment.
4. PREFERRED SKILLS:
  1. Basic drywall repair, caulking, and surface refinishing.
  2. Experience with specialty coatings or finishes (e.g., epoxy, anti-graffiti).
  3. Familiarity with environmentally safe and low-VOC products.
  4. Ability to properly remove wallpaper and prep walls for painting.
5. OTHER: Ability to perform the essential functions, meet the performance aptitudes, and fulfill the physical/sensory/environmental requirements of the job (with or without reasonable accommodations) is required.

  3. Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of electric and gas-powered painting equipment, and hand-held tools, such as rollers, scrapers, screwdrivers, and sanders.
  4. Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and advisory data and information.
  5. Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculate decimals and percentages; utilize geometric principles and formulas.
  6. Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
  7. Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness, and creativity required in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of walking, climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may include the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).
SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: Many tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate textures. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate depths. Most tasks require visual perception and discrimination.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Work is performed indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions. Tasks are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as strong odors, smoke, dusts, pollen, temperature and noise extremes, and toxic/poisonous agents. Exposure to chemicals, paint fumes, dust, and high places.
