Rock West Composites, Inc. has an exciting opportunity for a Metrology Engineer.
Rock West Composites, Inc. is an engineering and manufacturing company dedicated to providing innovative solutions for commercial and government customers. This position is located at our San Diego headquarters and reports to our Quality Manager.
Position Summary:
The position is responsible for the calibration, maintenance, and implementation of measurement and test equipment used to ensure precision and accuracy in manufacturing processes. The Metrology Engineer plays a critical role in the timely and efficient verification of product quality, identifying potential defects, and ensuring adherence to industry standards and specifications.
Essential Functions:

  • Dimensionally inspect components, equipment, tooling, and assemblies per engineering drawing.
  • Develop, plan, and execute engineering projects.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications to create inspection plans and perform inspections.
  • Run inspections based on scheduled plans and customer requirements, ensuring parts meet dimensional tolerances.
  • Define metrology specifications required for inspection and gauge fixtures for use in metrology applications and a production setting.
  • Oversee the calibration of measurement tools and equipment to ensure they meet industry standards, internal specifications, and customer requirements.
  • Operate CMMs to perform measurements, inspections, and quality checks on manufactured parts.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and resolve any programming or operational issues during CMM inspections and with measurement equipment. Coordinate with external calibration services when needed.
  • Establish, implement, and maintain a system for documenting calibration activities, measurement accuracy, and equipment status.
  • Support statistical process control (SPC), continuous improvement efforts, and the management and dissemination of metrology data.
  • Implement process improvements to increase the accuracy and efficiency of metrology operations and handheld inspection methods.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams (i.e., engineering, quality control, production) to meet business objectives and deadlines.
  • Maintain accurate records of calibration, maintenance, and testing activities, and generate inspection and calibration certificates and reports.
  • Develop and deliver training programs for staff on metrology best practices and equipment usage.
  • Stay updated with new CMM technologies, software, and best practices in quality control.
  • Solve complex problems, take a new perspective on existing solutions, and exercise judgment based on analysis of multiple sources of information.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and high standards of accuracy and precision.
  • Exhibit and promote an attitude that leads to an engaged and energized workforce.
  • Always operate in compliance with Rock West Composites' quality management system. Adherence to all AS9100 including ISO 9001 requirements.
  • Comply with Rock West Composites' company policies, procedures, and code of business conduct.
Non-Essential Functions:
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
  • High School diploma / GED is required.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in an Engineering field with Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Industrial Engineering highly preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in metrology or related field, with at least 2-3 years in an engineering or supervisory role.
  • Ability to interpret technical specifications and engineering drawings.
  • Extensive experience with calibration and maintenance of precision measuring instruments such as Coordinate
  • Measurement Machines (CMMs), Portable Coordinate Measurement Machines (PCMMs) such as laser tracker and articulated arm, calipers, micrometers, and other handheld measurement tools.
  • Experience with composite materials and processing techniques such as autoclave, resin transfer molding (RTM), and compression molding. Composite manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Certification in Metrology (e.g., A2LA, ASQ, NIST) preferred.
  • Current computer literacy is a must, including full proficiency in the use of the entire Microsoft Office Suite (i.e., Word,
  • Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Experience with AS9100 and Nadcap quality management systems.
  • Experience with lean manufacturing principles such as visual factory and lean manufacturing methods such as 5S and Kaizen.
  • Eligible candidates must be a United States Citizen, United States National, or a person lawfully admitted for permanent residence.

Compensation:
The compensation range for this position falls within $90,000 and $118,000. The final compensation will be determined based on experience, skillset, and other factors permitted by law.
