The Associated Students of CSU, Chico is recruiting for Cook I, Part-time . This is a part-time, non-benefited position that will work no more than 29 hours per week, 960 hours per fiscal year. The pay rate is $21.23 to $21.40/hr. There are multiple vacancies between Residential Dining and Retail Dining. There are two positions open and the anticipated schedule for one is Wednesday through Sunday from 9 am. to 3 pm. The second position's anticipated schedule is Friday through Tuesday from 9 am. to 3 pm. Schedules are subject to change based on departmental needs.
The Associated Students (AS) is a comprehensive campus auxiliary corporation of CSU,Chico serving thousands of students, faculty, staff and community members through myriad student programs, services and business enterprises. With an annual budget of more than $21M, the AS operates residential and retail dining services, the Bell Memorial Union, the Wildcat Recreation Center (WREC), and administers the contract for the Wildcat Store (bookstore). Additionally, the AS offers a wide variety of services and programs such as: CAVE (Community Action Volunteers in Education), Child Development Lab, Adventure Outings, Recycling, Sustainability and student government. Typically, the AS employs more than 100 full and part-time employees and more than 750 students.

COOK I, Part-Time
SUMMARY
Under general supervision, to be responsible for the preparation of menu items; to oversee the serving line functions during food preparation; to perform a variety of assistance with the preparation of food; and to do related work as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Prepares and cooks menu items as directed.
  • Assists lead cooks as needed with preparation.
  • Prepares cooking area.
  • Assists in monitoring customer traffic to minimize waiting and the amount of time food must be held on the serving line.
  • Ensures proper cleanliness, sanitation, and safety is maintained during cooking.
  • Properly stores leftover food items and supplies at the conclusion of the serving period.
  • Properly cleans and sanitizes the food preparation areas.
  • Assists with coordinating the work of student assistants assigned to food production.
  • Assists with a variety of other food service functions as needed.
  • Identifies and reports problems regarding equipment malfunction.
  • Represents the AS Dining Services to the campus community, vendors, and customers.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in a restaurant and kitchen environment; exposure to heat and moisture; continuous contact with staff, campus community, and public.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS - Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Stand for extended periods; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; verbal communication; reaching; lifting up to 50 lbs.; use of kitchen equipment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS:
  • Principles and methods of preparing and cooking menu items.
  • Operation, maintenance, and use of a variety of kitchen equipment.
  • Food service sanitation and safety.
  • Estimate proper quantities for economical food service.
  • Provide direction and work coordination for student assistants.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with the campus community, general public, co-workers, and those contacted during the course of work.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
  • One (1) year full-time or part-time equivalent responsible work experience in quantity food preparation, cooking and service OR four (4) semesters as a student worker at Marketplace Café, Sutter Hall or Catering departments of the Associated Students.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
  • Candidates with Culinary training will be given preference.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of or ability to obtain before hire:
  • ServSafe Manager Certification or equivalent preferred, or ability to obtain one within one year of hire required.
  • Post-Offer, pre-employment physical required.
  • Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. Associated Students will make a conditional offer of employment which may be rescinded if the background check reveals any disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.
