Purpose

The College of Pharmacy at the University of Texas at Austin is seeking an experienced and dynamic IT Director to lead its technology operations. This position is responsible for overseeing a team of IT professionals who provide desktop and server support, manage wired and wireless networking, support classroom and teaching technology, facilitate videoconferencing, and ensure information security.

The IT Director will collaborate with university-wide IT governance structures and initiatives to align college technology services with institutional priorities, as well as create long-term plans for the college’s information technology, media services and distance learning. The most successful candidate will have a strong background in higher education IT management, leadership experience, and a deep understanding of academic technology needs.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & IT Strategy

Develop and implement IT strategies aligned with college and university goals. Manage and mentor IT staff, fostering innovation and service excellence. Liaison with UT Austin central ITS, ensuring compliance with university policies and governance. Assess and address faculty, staff, and student technology needs.

Infrastructure & Systems Management

Oversee desktop, cloud, and enterprise application support. Manage wired and wireless networking for reliability and security. Support classroom and instructional technology, including audiovisual systems.

Cybersecurity, Compliance & Endpoint Management

Ensure compliance with UT Austin cybersecurity policies and secure data practices. Oversee Endpoint Management (EPM) compliance for college-managed devices. Respond to Information Security Office (ISO) security tickets and incidents.

Research & Vendor Technology Compliance

Vet and approve Confidential Data Control Plans (CDCPs) for faculty research. Guide researchers on secure data storage, transmission, and compliance. Manage software vetting and approval, ensuring alignment with UT Austin’s procurement and security standards.

User Support & Training

Lead IT service delivery and help-desk operations. Develop training programs for technology adoption and best practices.

Technology Innovation & Project Management

Identify and implement emerging technologies for education and research. Oversee IT projects, ensuring alignment with college goals and budgets. Evaluate and recommend hardware, software, and services.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Science, or related field. 5 years of IT leadership experience Experience managing IT teams, projects, and research IT compliance Experience with networking and cybersecurity Experience with videoconferencing technology

Preferred Qualifications

Additional experience and education may be substituted as appropriate.

Master’s degree in IT, Computer Science, or related field. More than 5 years of IT leadership experience, preferably in higher education. Understanding of UT Austin IT governance, policies, and security standards. Expertise in networking, cybersecurity, and academic technology. Knowledge of CDCP approvals and software vetting processes.

Salary Range

$95,000+ depending on qualification

Employment Eligibility:

Regular staff who have been employed in their current position for the last six continuous months are eligible for openings being recruited for through University-Wide or Open Recruiting, to include both promotional opportunities and lateral transfers. Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
