The Circulation Clerk is responsible for providing library services to all patrons. This is accomplished by answering the phones and greeting customers, checking materials in and out, processing new materials, shelving library materials, maintaining library's appearance, requesting interlibrary loans, assisting patrons with all requests, and other circulation duties as necessary. Examples of Duties

Works the circulation desk by: checking materials in and out, renewing checked out items, processing applications, shelving library materials, maintaining library appearance, contacting patrons as needed for library business, and maintaining daily logs of activities. Collects and documents payments from library patrons. Assists patrons with all library equipment and requests in-person, over the phone, by e-mail or other methods while maintaining customer friendly attitude. Processes new materials in preparation for circulation. Maintains documents at front desk by ensuring documents are up-to-date and available, including applications, brochures, bookmarks, sign-up sheets and other handouts. Ensures copy machine, printers and fax machine are ready for use by staff and the public. Processes membership applications. Assists with and coordinates library programming as needed. Attends staff meetings. Assists director/co-workers with additional projects as needed. Provides peer-to-peer training for staff and volunteers as assigned. Performs other related job duties as assigned. Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience: High School Diploma; and one (1) year of related work experience. Special Qualifications: Effective bilingual communication desired. Supplemental Information

Knowledge of basic operational, technical, or office processes. Knowledge of basic library services and materials. Skill in the use of small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems. Skill in using computers for data entry. Skill in using computers for word processing and/or accounting purposes. Ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries, thesauruses, and encyclopedias. Ability to deal with system of real numbers; practical application of fractions, percentages/ratios/proportions and measurement. Ability to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech. Ability to maintain positive working relationships with city departments and personnel, outside agencies, community organizations, patrons, and the general public. Ability to remain flexible and open to new ideas. Ability and willingness to adjust hours to accommodate needs of the library. Ability to organize and communicate effectively.
