JOB SUMMARY

Provide a brief description as to the primary purpose of this job (no more than three to five sentences):

This is a part-time paraprofessional public service specialist position that requires knowledge of professional practice and independent judgment in its application, as well as the application of prescribed procedures and methods. The employee assists the library's diverse patron population at the Circulation Desk and assists with materials traffic management and related special project. Scheduled hours may vary weekly. The employee works under the supervision of the Manager for Patron Services.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/WORK PERFORMED

Work at the Circulation Desk is the primary responsibility of this position, which also includes, but is not limited to, the following activities: • Identify and retrieve collection and account information needed by patrons • Assist patrons with access to the library's physical collections • Conduct patron record queries, place holds, and facilitate materials transfer between network libraries • Create new patron accounts • Mediate and resolve customer disputes, complaints, and inquiries related to circulation policies and procedures • Facility with technology, with the library's ILS, and with accessing online services provided by the library to patrons, particularly those related to access • Process library materials • Administer interlibrary loan program • Manage staffing at circulation desk • Facility with troubleshooting technology such as printers, copiers, computers

Other responsibilities include: • Attend continuing education programs • Participate in library staff meetings and training sessions • Perform related work as required, including work at all library service desks and minor maintenance activity • Off-desk activities as assigned, including preparation and cataloging of new materials and special collection development projects

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

List key dimensions (measurements for success) for this position: • Knowledge of professionally curated print and online resources • Ability to conduct reference interviews to determine patrons' information needs • Familiarity with adult fiction and non-fiction books and resources and popular culture references • Ability to use and explain standard office software and web browsers • Familiarity with computers, printers and copiers, and personal mobile devices (e.g., e-readers, tablets, smart phones) • Patience, flexibility, and curiosity • Ability to work with minimum supervision

QUALIFICATIONS

List the minimum requirements to be considered for this position: • Basic computer skills and familiarity with internet information retrieval are required. • Graduation from an accredited two-year or four-year college or university is preferred. • Public library experience is preferred.

May be required to work some overtime upon demand of workload

The Marion Public Library is a busy, customer focused library with a high amount of use by children and their parents. Patrons have high expectations regarding the quality and efficiency of library service.

Evening and weekend work is required.

Regularly works with and has access to patron records that are confidential according to the Code of Iowa.
