hands-on Microsoft Cloud Architect

to lead enterprise cloud modernization initiatives aligned with the Town’s IT Strategic Roadmap. This role is ideal for a strategic doer—someone who thrives in implementation while effectively communicating solutions to non-technical leadership.

Job Title Microsoft Cloud Architect – Cloud and Modernization Projects Location Herndon, VA (On-site 5 days/week to start – no exceptions) Some flexibility to remote work in the future, at the manager’s discretion. Duration 6 months with the potential of a long-term extension Compensation The hourly rate for this role is about $80HR depending on the ideal candidate’s background and experience. Interview Process Initial virtual interviews Final in-person interview is required for offer consideration Key Responsibilities Leadership Communication & Strategic Alignment Develop and present visual roadmaps, dashboards, and milestone charts for executive audiences Translate technical content into plain language briefings for leadership and non-technical stakeholders Align cloud projects with Town goals, budget timelines, staffing, and change management needs Configure and manage Microsoft Entra ID, AD Connect, and Intune (MDM/MAM) Implement Zero Trust security controls (MFA, Conditional Access, DLP) Configure Microsoft Defender for Office 365 and mitigate threats Manage SharePoint Online & Microsoft Teams migration, governance, and onboarding Perform root cause analysis, remediation, and system optimization Ensure vendor deliverables align with Microsoft and Town architecture standards Lead change management strategies to ensure user adoption Develop communication plans, training materials, and FAQs Monitor adoption metrics and user feedback to guide improvements Mitigate resistance and ensure long-term engagement Build project timelines, interdependency maps, and resource forecasts Track delivery risks and facilitate coordination between vendors and departments Proactively identify delays or blockers and escalate when necessary Conduct training sessions and department-specific Q&As Develop training guides, job aids, and self-help resources Provide Tier 2/3 support for escalated cloud-related issues Maintain runbooks, knowledge base articles, and SOPs Required Qualifications 8+ years of IT engineering/architecture experience 4+ years focused on Microsoft 365, cloud infrastructure, or cybersecurity Strong experience in both technical implementation and executive communications Experience with SharePoint Online, Teams, OneDrive governance Knowledge of Conditional Access, MFA, DLP, Zero Trust principles Experience creating executive briefings, visual project plans, and end-user adoption materials Seniority level
