Simply put, we help save lives — and we’re proud to say we’ve been nationally recognized for how well we do it. We conduct and fund game-changing research. We educate the public to prevent medical issues and the need for transplants. We offer grief resources to donor families. Pioneer new facilities and protocols that improve the viability of organ and tissue donations. We provide affordable, temporary housing for transplant patients and their families. Partner with community organizations to drive donor registration. We meet with schools, clergy, and local leaders to share our cause and our message. We stop at nothing because we’re the kind of people who give everything.
The Position
As an Organ Recovery Coordinator (ORC), you’ll play a critical part in the organ donation process—from supporting transplant surgeons in the operating room to ensuring donated organs are recovered, preserved, and transported with the highest standards of care. You’ll travel throughout our service area and across the country, helping to bring hope to patients and families when they need it most.
What You’ll Do
Operating Room Support & Organ Perfusion
Acts as a circulator in the OR during organ recovery including working with scrub technologist to open/prepare room for OR cases Assists with packaging of organs and specimens in accordance with Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) Policies Travel as part of the procurement team to donor hospitals throughout our service area and around the country to facilitate organ recovery, preservation, and packaging Setup and operate cardiac Cath laboratory equipment, field and medication as directed Performs surgical dissection of kidneys including cleaning fat and obtaining biopsies Performs pulsatile perfusion for kidneys, including cannulation of arteries, initiation of pumping, management, troubleshooting, and documentation during therapy, removal from pump, and decannulation Performs ex-vivo normothermic liver perfusion therapy when required by utilizing the device, including device set up and management, drawing up and administer medications, associated documentation, transportation of organ on device, and intraoperative assistance in delivery of the organ
Long Distance Line Management
Respond to transplant centers communication regarding an accepted import organ. Coordinate all transportation logistics including air and ground transportation. Communicate logistics to both the Surgeons and the Coordinator assigned to the case both within our DSA and across the nation. Conduct detailed shift report with oncoming staff to ensure continuity of import organ handling.
Schedule
Thirteen 24-hour on-call shifts per month, including every 3rd weekend rotation
What You’ll Bring
On-call availability with the ability to respond on-site to our St. Louis (Forest Park area) office within 60 minutes or less 1+ year of scrub tech experience required 2+ years of operating room experience preferred Willingness and ability to travel by airplane or ambulance as needed for organ cases during scheduled shifts Experience in a health-related field (scrub tech experience strongly preferred) Valid driver’s license, personal transportation, and proof of insurance for work-related travel Comfort using a variety of technologies and software systems
