Work Hours: 12‑hour shifts – 7 days in a two‑week period, including alternating weekends.

Work Setting: In‑person

Location: Azusa or Redlands, CA

Travel: Willingness to travel as needed to donor hospitals and transplant centers.

Salary Range: $77,350 to $86,450

Job Summary The Surgical Recovery Coordinator (SRC) plays a critical role in facilitating organ recovery and transplantation by overseeing all aspects of operating room (OR) coordination and recovery processes. This dynamic role requires expertise in managing surgical teams, coordinating with medical professionals, and ensuring the successful recovery and preservation of organs from brain‑dead (BD) and donation after circulatory death (DCD) donors.

Duties & Responsibilities

Perform OR set up and coordination which includes the room set up with appropriate medical equipment, sterile medical supplies, and instrumentation for the recovery of organs such as kidneys, liver, lungs, pancreas, heart, intestines, vessels, tissue typing material.

Perform and ensure all organ, specimens, vessels, and blood tubes are labeled and packaged accurately.

Perform organ perfusion.

Assist transplant teams with recovery efforts.

Assist in the aseptic surgical recovery of organs as requested by recovery surgeons.

Perform aseptic surgical recovery of organs for research.

Verify ABO and serology results.

Verify death pronouncement notes 1 and 2 for Brain‑Dead (BD) donors.

Verify death pronouncement notes for DCD (Donation Cardiac Death) donors.

Complete organ recovery documentation and document the recovery process in digitalDonor (Electronic Medical Records system).

Ensure all organs are labeled and packaged accurately per OneLegacy and OPTN policy.

Accurately document all organ laterally in digitalDonor utilizing the OneLegacy EMR data system.

Provide education to both external and internal partners on both brain death and DCD organ recoveries.

Research Organ Allocation

Participate in case huddles.

Participate in pre‑recovery time out for organ OR recoveries.

Set up couriers for supplies and equipment.

Review all pre/post organ OR documentation.

Perform other logistical tasks as instructed by management for the purposes of facilitating tissue donation.

Serve as subject matter expert for staff when complex issues arise.

Organ Pathology

Receive specimens and carefully check paperwork for accuracy and completeness, including appropriate documentation of medical necessity; contact ordering source if any information is incomplete.

Monitor specimen identification using the laboratory’s specimen identification policies; resolve problems and complete documentation as required.

Process test requests with accompanying specimens and enter orders as required; use established policies and procedures for specimen acceptability and troubleshoot or clarify questions regarding specimen integrity.

Prepare frozen section in accordance with OneLegacy policy and facilitate specimen interpretation with third‑party organization.

Process specimens by placing on instrument and placing in appropriate storage area.

Prepare and return blood components and tissues following patient and product identification procedures.

Troubleshoot laboratory’s defined equipment and document system error codes.

Respond to telephone requests regarding add‑on tests, patient results, availability of products, and department procedures.

Practice universal safety precautions according to company policy and procedures at all times (e.g., use of gloves, lab coat, and other personal protective equipment).

Plan and coordinate workflow to meet OneLegacy requirements and provide for satisfactory turnaround time of tests.

Use computers to access specimens, report results, and collect quality assurance data using the Anatomic Pathology information system.

Surgical Technologist Support (OR Scrub)

Aseptically set up the OR for organ recovery and break down the OR post‑recovery.

Perform surgical prep and drape of the donor.

Manage instrumentation during the case and complete a pre and post case instrument count.

Hand off instruments and supplies to surgeon(s) during the organ recovery.

Verify authorization and organs to be recovered.

Assist the surgeon(s) as needed or directed.

Assemble and ensure all pertinent documents remain in the donor chart following completion of the recovery.

Document the recovery process in digitalDonor (Electronic Medical Records system).

Donor Receiving and Releasing

Assist with logistics and coordination of donor transportation to OneLegacy recovery facilities for recovery.

Facilitate receiving and releasing of donors in OneLegacy Transplant Recovery Centers from partners such as transport companies, coroner offices, and funeral homes.

Facility Maintenance and Cleaning and Materials Management

Perform facility cleaning and maintenance such as cleaning, disinfecting, mopping, and taking out trash in the supply depot, recovery OR, morgue, tissue shipping/lab room, and other areas as needed.

Ensure inventory of organ OR supplies is maintained appropriately to support day‑to‑day operations.

Ensure inventory of administrative supplies is maintained appropriately to support day‑to‑day operations.

Remove trash from exterior waste receptacles and maintain the cleanliness of the office space.

Assist Central Supply department with instrument cleaning, decontamination, sterilization and inventory management as needed.

Job Qualifications and Requirements Education:

Required to have at least one of the following: completion of an EMT program, completion of a Surgical Technologist program, current or previous licensure as a paramedic, previous experience in tissue or organ recoveries, experience in an allied health field such as embalming, physiology, anatomy, mortuary sciences, surgical, EMS, EMT, ER technologist, paramedic, pathology, nursing. A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four‑year college or university is preferred.

Experience:

1+ years of experience in organ recovery or transplantation is highly preferred.
