HCM’s PK12 Market Sector is seeking a

Design Researcher

in our Conshohocken office. The role involves integrating educational strategy with evidence-based environmental psychology and neuroarchitecture. You will work within an interdisciplinary team of architects, interior designers, landscape architects, and school stakeholders to conduct research and translate findings into spatial strategies that enhance student learning and emotional well-being in school environments. Key Responsibilities

Lead research studies on the cognitive, emotional, and physiological impacts of built environments on students, focusing on attention, stress, memory, and social cognition. Design and implement experimental tools, including behavioral protocols, psychometric surveys, and sensor-driven data collection (e.g., EEG, eye-tracking, physiological monitoring). Analyze data using statistical software (R, SPSS, MATLAB) and develop actionable insights for design teams. Translate research findings into design guidelines for sensory-rich classrooms, daylighting, acoustics, outdoor environments, and wellbeing zones based on neuroarchitecture principles. Collaborate with educators, administrators, and design committees to align research with pedagogical and neurodevelopmental objectives. Present research outcomes via workshops, client presentations, publications, and community exhibits. Mentor junior team members and develop internal research capacity. Work with Principals and leaders to set research priorities and strategies. Integrate research into design solutions with internal teams. Qualifications

M.A./M.S./Ph.D. in Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, Psychology, Educational Psychology, Environmental Psychology, Architecture, or related fields. 10+ years of experience in applied research related to architecture, education, workspace design, or environmental psychology. Technical skills in experimental design, sensor deployment, statistical modeling, and data visualization. Proficiency in Revit and Adobe Creative Suite; experience with cognitive modeling and prototyping is a plus. Strong communication skills for presenting to non-technical audiences and crafting evidence-based narratives. Collaborative mindset with experience working across disciplines like architecture, education, and human factors. Experience with research dissemination, peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, or public engagement on neuroarchitecture themes. Preferred experience in K‑12 design and familiarity with educational standards (e.g., acoustics, lighting, IEQ). Our Culture & Benefits
