ML Engineering Manager – Healthtech AI Agents (LLMs / Tool Use / Clinical Data) Boston (Hybrid - 1–2 days/week in office) Comp: $220–270k base DOE + equity + full benefits Partnered with a mission-driven Healthtech startup that’s reimagining how care is delivered and scaled using autonomous AI agents. Backed by top-tier investors and led by founders from OpenAI, Google Health, and major healthcare systems, the company is building intelligent, clinically informed agents that can assist providers, reduce administrative burden, and unlock better patient outcomes. They’re looking for a founding ML Engineering Manager to lead the technical development of their agent systems. This is a hands-on leadership role focused on building agents that can reason, plan, and act using real-world healthcare data-everything from clinical notes to EHRs to insurance claims. You’ll play a key role in shaping both the product and the team, with broad ownership across ML strategy, infra, and execution. What you’ll be doing: Designing and deploying LLM-based agents that assist clinicians, navigate care plans, or automate documentation Building tool-using agents that interact with EHRs, scheduling platforms, or payer APIs Architecting scalable ML infrastructure for real-time inference, traceability, and HIPAA compliance Recruiting and mentoring a small team of ML and infra engineers Collaborating with clinicians, product, and compliance to ensure safety, impact, and trust What we’re looking for: 6+ years of experience building ML/AI systems, ideally in production Healthtech settings Deep understanding of LLMs, NLP, and model-based reasoning frameworks (React, RAG, tools) Experience working with healthcare data (EHR, claims, notes) or regulated data pipelines Strong software engineering skills (Python, PyTorch/JAX, cloud infra, containerization) Proven ability to lead technical teams and deliver in fast-paced, 0→1 environments Bonus: knowledge of healthcare standards (FHIR, HL7), clinical workflows, or explainable AI This is a unique opportunity to build AI systems that can reduce clinician burnout, improve care quality, and make the healthcare system more intelligent-at scale.
