The Wesleyan Church Position Summary:
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) serves as a key member of the executive cabinet of The Wesleyan Church Headquarters. The CFO provides strategic oversight and operational leadership for all financial and administrative functions. This role ensures the denomination's resources are managed with integrity, transparency, and in alignment with Wesleyan values and mission. The CFO oversees financial planning, accounting, HR, IT, risk management, and operational systems to support the health and growth of the church’s ministries.
Essential Responsibilities:
Financial Strategy & Stewardship Lead the development of long-term financial strategies that support the mission of the Wesleyan Church. Create and manage the annual budget in collaboration with ministry leaders and the General Board. Monitor cash flow, investment performance, and financial sustainability. Provide financial analysis and counsel to the General Superintendent and Executive Cabinet. Financial Management & Reporting Supervise accounting operations including general ledger, contributions, grants, payroll, and accounts payable/receivable. Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports. Prepare reports and presentations for the General Board of Administration and audit committees. Ensure compliance with GAAP, IRS nonprofit requirements, and the Wesleyan Discipline. Audit, Risk, & Compliance Lead preparation for the annual audit and liaise with external auditors. Maintain internal controls and policies to safeguard church assets. Oversee insurance coverage, legal compliance, and risk mitigation strategies for all operations and ministries. Human Resources & Administration Direct HR strategy, including hiring practices, benefits administration, performance management, and compensation. Uphold policies in compliance with employment law and the theological ethos of the Wesleyan Church. Provide leadership for operational staff and consultants in HR, operations, and IT functions. Property & Operational Oversight Oversee stewardship and management of denominational properties, vehicles, and equipment. Manage vendor contracts, leases, and facility usage agreements. Support local churches and districts in property acquisition, sale, and development processes. Leadership & Collaboration Serve as a trusted advisor and spiritual partner to executive leadership. Promote biblical stewardship, financial discipleship, and organizational excellence across the denomination. Facilitate training and consultation with districts, pastors, and treasurers on financial best practices and compliance with the Discipline.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and unwavering commitment to Christ and the Church’s mission. Active member of the Wesleyan Church. Proactive, hands-on strategic thinker who owns the responsibility for financial management. Commitment to recruiting, mentoring, training, and retaining a diverse team and the foresight to delegate accordingly. Keen analytic, organization and problem-solving skills which allows for strategic data interpretation. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management, boards, or other outside partners. Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree with an accounting or finance major; MBA preferred, and CPA required. 7-10 years of progressively responsible experience in financial management, with at least: 3-5 years in a senior leadership role (e.g., controller, director of finance, or CFO) Experience in a nonprofit or faith-based organization is strongly preferred Prior work with boards, audits, compliance, and restricted funds Technology savvy with experience selecting and overseeing software installations; advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software.
