What to Expect

The Tesla Robotics Team designs and builds humanoid bi-pedal robots (Optimus) to perform tasks that are boring, repetitive, and dangerous for humans. The team combines mechanical, electrical, controls, software, and manufacturing engineering disciplines in a highly collaborative environment. We are seeking talented Mechanical Design Engineers to help turn this ambitious vision into reality, emphasizing creative problem-solving and technical rigor. What You'll Do

Design mechanical components and assemblies with a focus on achieving high precision through high-volume production methods. Determine component-level mechanical requirements (e.g., stiffness, strength) from functional product specifications. Apply analytical methods, including calculations and simulations, for designing and optimizing structures and mechanical components. Perform tolerance analysis considering process variability, environmental factors, and material aging to assess assembly fits and backlash. Select materials and processes suitable for high-volume production, considering mechanical properties, dimensional capabilities, aesthetics, cost, and supply chain stability. Collaborate with injection molding suppliers and tool designers to adapt part designs for manufacturability based on material and process constraints. Lead all phases of product launch, including part design, tool design/Moldflow, tool trial and validation, process certification, and quality approvals, including cosmetic and dimensional specifications. Conduct should-cost analysis to determine the fair price of goods from raw materials through processing steps, including labor and logistics. Manage suppliers to ensure projects meet design specifications and timeline commitments. What You'll Bring

Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent industry experience. Experience shipping consumer-grade products at rates in the millions of units per year, with injection molding experience preferred. Deep knowledge of material science and high-volume manufacturing processes, such as injection molding and casting. Proficiency in designing parts and assemblies using 3D modeling software (CATIA preferred). Proficiency in drafting engineering drawings and conducting tolerance stack-up analysis (GD&T required). Experience with stretchable materials, soft materials, and fabrics is a plus. Compensation and Benefits

As a full-time Tesla employee, you are eligible for the following benefits from day one: Medical plans including Aetna PPO and HSA options with $0 payroll deduction Family-building, fertility, adoption, and surrogacy benefits Dental (including orthodontics) and vision plans with $0 contribution options Company-paid HSA contributions when enrolled in high-deductible plans Flexible Spending Accounts for healthcare and dependent care 401(k) with employer match, Employee Stock Purchase Plans, and other financial benefits Company-paid basic life, AD&D, short-term and long-term disability insurance Employee Assistance Program Sick and vacation time, paid holidays, and flexible scheduling for salaried roles Back-up childcare and parenting support resources Optional voluntary benefits such as critical illness, hospital indemnity, accident insurance, legal services, and pet insurance Weight loss and tobacco cessation programs Tesla Babies program Commuter benefits Employee discounts and perks Expected compensation ranges from $88,000 to $228,000 annually, plus cash and stock awards and benefits.
