Are you a strategic leader with a passion for financial excellence and operational efficiency? We’re seeking a dynamic Assistant Director to lead a high-performing team across key administrative and financial functions. This pivotal role ensures the integrity, accuracy, and compliance of our financial operations while supporting the broader mission of the organization.
Additionally, this position would require you to provide financial oversight for all aspects of reporting and compliance, accounting services, grant accounting and tax compliance. The Assistant Director of Finance will lead the finance staff and is the primary liaison with external auditors. This individual will foster financial leadership, efficiency, systemization, and discipline throughout the organization.
Specific Responsibilities
Lead and mentor teams responsible for: Payroll, Accounts Payable & Receivable Treasury and Cash Management Contract Administration General Accounting and Financial Reporting Grant and Fund Reporting Facilities Oversight Oversee the preparation and coordination of audits and regulatory reviews Ensure compliance with all applicable funding, legal, and regulatory requirements Drive process improvements and implement best practices across financial operations Collaborate cross-functionally to support strategic planning and resource allocation
This position is located in Alexandria, Virginia, you will be required to come to the office 5 days a week for 90 days, then transition to a hybrid schedule, with Mondays and Fridays remote and Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in the office.
Job Functions
Financial Stewardship and Strategy for Growth
Evaluate current practices and policies. Drive continuous improvement; Identify opportunities for process enhancement; Collaborate with the Director of Finance to ensure organizational decisions, actions and communications are in support of the agreed upon goals; Balance strategic objectives with tactical execution to achieve results; Provide management with reports to highlight risks, opportunities and strategic outcomes; Manage the impact of funding decisions, the structure of funding and timing of funding on strategic cash flow analysis for the organization; and Lead in providing solutions and in bridge-building between Finance and other teams. Develop creative solutions while ensuring compliance.
Financial Reporting and Compliance
Produce financial reporting for IACP senior leadership and the Board of Directors; Monitor the progress of audits and ensure that the finance team is proactively engaging with external auditors as needed; Preparation of federal filings ensuring accuracy in required informational reporting; and Establish and implement accounting policies and procedures in accordance with U.S. GAAP, IRS regulations, and IACP standards;
POSITION SPECIFICATIONS
Education:
Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Accounting or Finance. Advanced degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, or a related field preferred.
CPA required.
Required Skills & Experience
Minimum of 8 years of work experience in financial leadership within an international nonprofit organization, including oversight of multi-project accounting operations and in-depth financial analysis. Prior demonstrated experience in building and developing a highly talented and customer-service oriented team that is committed to excellence; Ability to provide leadership to a team of 10+ staff, including indirect (matrixed staff) to ensure productivity, excellence, alignment and professional development; Prior experience in grants accounting and compliance (U.S. federal grants and other international and foundation grants); Not-for-profit accounting experience required; Experience in international finance and compliance; including financial reporting across multiple countries and in a variety of currencies with prior exposure to legal entity accounting and reporting requirements in various countries; Superior knowledge of GAAP and IRS regulations regarding 501 (c) (3) organizations and experience as the lead on general ledger, audit, and tax; Analytical, lateral and linear thinker with great professional judgment; Exceptional oral and written presentation and communication skills; Adaptive, appropriately assertive, highly organized and autonomous; Proficient with various financial systems and demonstrated ability to seek innovative utilization of technology to streamline financial processes; and Experience with AMS systems preferred.

Familiarity with a policing profession Experience in a non-profit organization, association, or criminal justice environment Experience or familiarity with operational and administrative aspects of policing
Special Conditions and Work Environment
Travel will be required based on job responsibilities. Work takes place primarily in an office environment. Light lifting, bending, and reaching may be required.
