The University of Iowa Health Care Administrative Fellowship provides select individuals with a post-graduate opportunity to foster development as a health care professional in an academic medical center. This position aims to develop a greater understanding of issues central to UI Health Care through supporting a broad range of projects of operational and strategic importance, in partnership with clinical and administrative leaders. This position requires systematic, substantial, in-depth knowledge of the field of healthcare administration. This knowledge is typically acquired through a graduate program resulting in the issuance of a master's degree in healthcare administration, business administration, public health, or a similar discipline.
Position Responsibilities: University of Iowa Health Care is hiring for their 2026-2028 Administrative Fellowship. The fellowship is a two-year opportunity. In the first year, the Fellow is assigned to Hospital Administration and reports to the Administrative Chief of Staff of UI Health Care, Clinical Enterprise. In the second year, the Fellow transitions to University of Iowa Physicians (UIP), reporting to the Director of Clinical Services for UIP. The core responsibilities at these locations will be similar; day-to-day interactions and projects during the first year will be centered around the hospital, and projects during the second year will be primarily focused on ambulatory clinics.
Administrative Fellows benefit from ongoing interaction with the entire leadership team, involving a broad range of strategic and operational issues. The content of the experience is tailored to best match organizational needs and individual strengths and interests. As such, the following components and characteristics provide a framework for defining the fellowship experience:
Professional Growth
- Attend and participate in leadership meetings in which direction, policy, and strategic issues are addressed.
- Engage in one-on-one meetings and rounding with leaders across the organization to learn about different clinical and academic departments.
- Participate in Executive Leadership Academy, a program run by the Office of the Chief Medical Officer to provide promising leaders across the organization with leadership education and mentorship.
Data Tracking & Analyses
- Track and analyze performance metrics for quarterly meetings between department leadership and the CEO's Office.
- Analyze drivers of U.S. News Rankings results.
- Analyze data for departmental performance
Project Management
- Partner with clinical department leadership on strategic initiatives and other follow-up items aimed at improving performance across our organizational strategic pillars.
- Run other projects of strategic or operational importance to Executive Leadership during the course of the Fellowship.
People Management
- Manage the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding processes for the subsequent year administrative fellow, graduate assistants, and summer interns.
- Serve as a graduate program teaching assistant to support teaching and grading for Master of Healthcare Administration Legal and Integrative Capstone courses.
Qualifications
Education Requirement:
Master's degree in Hospital Administration, Business Administration, or a similar degree from a CAHME (Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education) or equivalent accredited graduate program prior to the fellowship start date.
Experience Requirements
Strong academic performance Relevant experience (1-3 years) in healthcare or a health industry or business administration-related job Outstanding verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills. Excellent presentation skills. Proficiency in computer software applications. Demonstrated experience working effectively in a welcoming and respectful workplace environment. Possess the ability to analyze complex data and report metrics. Desired Qualifications
Demonstrated interest in a career in academic medical center administration.
