The per diem Technologist in the Blood Bank's Clinical Laboratory is responsible for performing, evaluating, and reporting of technical laboratory testing on patient specimens for use in the transfusion of blood products. Follows established procedures to ensure laboratory quality control and compliance with professional standards of practice. Shift- 6AM-2:30PM - 2-3 days per week - Experience working in a hospital blood bank (transfusion service) highly preferred. Responsibilities: Follows established procedures for laboratory quality control, ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, quality standards, compliance activities, and policies. Accessions patient specimens for tests and blood product orders. Performs, but not limited to, pre-transfusion testing such as ABO/Rh, antibody screening, antibody identification, DAT and crossmatch. Performs other immunohematology tests as requested according to standard operating procedure. Performs and maintains competency in the technical and related work of the Blood Bank Laboratory. Effectively manages resources such as productivity, supplies, instruments, and equipment. Plans work and completes job responsibilities in an efficient and productive manner. Processes and labels blood components including, aliquoting, washing red cells, irradiating, thawing frozen products and pooling according to standard operating procedures. Reports test results in a timely manner according to established laboratory protocols. Issues blood products upon request by performing an accurate clerical check of patient and donor information by cross-referencing requests with Blood Bank data according to standard operating procedure. Demonstrates knowledge of Safety in Blood Banking including biological, chemical and radiation safety. Appropriately detects, evaluates and reports suspected complications experienced by transfusion recipients. Consistently completes Transfusion Reaction Investigation thoroughly and accurately, before submitting for supervisory and medical director review. Ability to effectively relate and communicate with internal and external customers. Intermediate knowledge of laboratory information systems. Requires critical thinking skills, effective communication skills, decisive judgment, performance with high levels of accuracy, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
