Chief Purpose Of This Position

The Director of Communications supports the mission of the VCU School of Nursing by effectively communicating and raising greater awareness of school-related activities and accomplishments to target audiences including key external stakeholders (alumni, the nursing profession, donors, prospective students, prospective employees, academic nursing organizations, the public, legislators, and similar) and internal stakeholders (current VCU students, faculty, staff; VCU administration; the VCU community; Board of Visitors, and similar).

Position Responsibilities

Work with University Relations to elevate SON priorities and other newsworthy initiatives. Provide a mechanism to promote newsworthy accomplishments of SON programs, students, and employees to appropriate internal and external media outlets. Share the unique voice of the SON through storytelling, by identifying student, faculty, staff features, alumni spotlights to showcase in print, video content and other digital channels. Create a meaningful brand for the VCU School of Nursing that supports all publications, web content, and media messages with a common theme and feel. Manage school publications and announcements to ensure timely and persuasive communication. Direct and manage the school’s website as an important resource to key audiences. Develop strategic promotional and marketing materials for recruitment of students and faculty and the promotion of school initiatives, using a variety of contemporary approaches including social media. Plan, create, and oversee the design, content, and production of marketing materials. Serve as an advisor to the Dean and other SON leaders regarding situational responses.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Direct experience developing and managing graphic design, marketing, and web projects 5+ years of work experience in marketing, public relations and/or communications Excellent written and verbal communication skills Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, or related field Experience in higher education
