Job Duties:

The Office of Academic Affairs (OAA) facilitates the program approval and change processes for the Board of Regents, the Universities of Wisconsin President, and the UW universities to sustain sufficient access for students to majors and careers, identify gaps in systemwide program array, and analyze the workforce development needs of the state-all in the context of efficient management of systemwide resources.

OAA engages faculty in communities of practice informed by scholarship and critical reflection that results in meaningful learning for all students in the Universities of Wisconsin. In addition, OAA facilitates and supports faculty, staff, students, and UW universities to develop, implement, and evaluate initiatives and policies that align university programs with the current and future international and global education needs of our state and nation.

The Associate Vice President (AVP) for Academic Affairs provides operational and strategic oversight of systemwide programs and policies such as those relating to academic program planning and array management, student learning, faculty and instructional development, sponsored programs, grants, and awards. The AVP will create a workplace environment that places a high value on collaboration among the members of the OAA team and colleagues across divisions in UW Administration and at the UW universities. The AVP will successfully engage colleagues and teams, recognizing and respecting a broad spectrum of backgrounds, expertise, and experiences among individuals who represent a variety of functional areas and disciplines. This position will also maintain and leverage contacts and strong partnerships with the appropriate national and regional associations, organizations, and higher education policy development entities. This role reports to the Senior Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs.

Key Job Responsibilities: Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees Serves as a liaison to applicable external agencies and industries, internal departments, and applicable educational institutions representing the university with respect to processes and procedures Provides strategic leadership and direction in planning, implementing, improving, and evaluating an administrative department and promoting operational improvements under broad administrative direction Supervises administrative management professionals, technical, support, and student staff Establishes, monitors, evaluates and modifies processes, procedures, and/or standards; and ensuring alignment with the university's mission, values, goals, and objectives, and all local, state, and federal laws and regulations Interprets and applies federal and state mandated guidelines Plans, implements, administers, and evaluates related programs, projects, and services impacting the university Provides leadership in problem-solving and promoting systems improvement in assigned department Develops and monitors budgets in assigned department, implements and allocates resources following budget approval, and approves expenditures Provide strategic leadership and support in the planning, development, and review for Office of Academic Affairs initiatives in the Universities of Wisconsin. Oversee the evaluation of proposed academic programs and make recommendations to the Senior Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, President of the Universities of Wisconsin, and Board of Regents regarding the feasibility and merits of implementing the proposed academic program. Partner strategically with the Associate Vice President for Online Learning, ensuring both offices perform work collaboratively on initiatives and objectives. Partner with the Associate Vice President for Enrollment and Student Affairs on Transfer initiatives and leading strategic planning around Dual Enrollment in Wisconsin. Work with the General Council's office, Government Relations, and Communications to provide an academic affairs perspective to ongoing work. Maintain an understanding of Higher Learning Commission policies and procedures, as well as the impact of state and federal policy changes on higher education in Wisconsin. Develop and implement policies and procedures governing the academic program approval and array. Foster collaborative academic activities among Universities of Wisconsin universities and with other higher education entities in the state. Oversee a variety of programs that support the work of the Universities of Wisconsin faculty and academic staff, including professional development programming, awards, and grants. Work collaboratively with Regents and colleagues from across the Universities of Wisconsin Administration

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A completed terminal degree. A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience as a faculty member and academic administrator. Demonstrated extensive administrative leadership experience, including budget and personnel experience or other related administrative experience. Demonstrated interest and experience in academic program planning, review, evaluation, and assessment. Experience and sensitivity working with higher education institutions with diverse missions (doctoral, comprehensive, and extension) such as those that comprise the Universities of Wisconsin. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience working in a multi-university system. Experience working as a campus liaison to a regional accrediting body. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Flexibility and skill in managing during periods of change. Demonstrated success in leading groups of diverse individuals to reach common solutions. Outstanding communications and interpersonal skills. Excellent organizational and project management skills. A broad understanding of and commitment to the teaching, research, and public service missions of public higher education. Ability to lead the development, review, and implementation of academic policies, procedures, and practices related to academic program planning. Strong leadership, team-building, and employee relations skills with a demonstrated ability to foster collaborative working relationships. Knowledge of institutional and/or programmatic accreditation practices and state and federal policies/regulations as they relate to higher education. Ability to analyze data to make data driven decisions for change management. Comprehensive understanding of the pressing challenges in modern higher education. WORK LOCATION

The office location is located at Van Hise Hall, 1220 Linden Drive in Madison WI. Telecommuting or hybrid work options may be available, with a minimum in-office expectation of 3 days per week. Telecommuting agreements are subject to change at any time.

COMPENSATION

The Associate Vice President is a full-time, salaried (exempt), limited appointee position.

Well-qualified candidates can expect a starting annual salary within a range of $168,000 - $182,000 commensurate with the candidate's education, related experience, and qualifications.
