Description
Position Summary:
The Oil Lab Supervisor oversees the daily operations of the quality assurance laboratory within a vegetable oil manufacturing facility. This role ensures that all products meet food safety, quality, and regulatory standards through consistent testing, method validation, and adherence to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP). The supervisor leads a team of Lab Associates, manages lab resources, and collaborates with production and quality departments to maintain product integrity and support continuous improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities: Supervise and schedule laboratory personnel to ensure timely and accurate testing of raw materials, in-process samples, and finished products. Monitor laboratory procedures and enforce compliance with safety, environmental, and food safety standards (FDA, FSMA, HACCP, GFSI, etc.). Ensure proper calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment (e.g., GC-FID, GSMS/MS, ICP, titrators, spectrophotometers). Develop, review, and update laboratory SOPs and quality testing methods for vegetable oil products (refined, crude, blends, etc.). Maintain detailed and accurate records of lab results, investigations, and corrective actions. Conduct routine internal audits and participate in external regulatory and customer audits. Train and mentor Lab Associates on test procedures, documentation, and quality systems. Coordinate proficiency testing and method validation programs to ensure lab accuracy and reliability. Investigate non-conformances and assist in root cause analysis and corrective action implementation. Collaborate with production and quality teams on product release decisions and process improvements. Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Food Science, Microbiology, or related field. Minimum 3-5 years of experience in a food laboratory environment, preferably in oils, fats, or related industry. At least 1-2 years of leadership or supervisory experience. Skills and Competencies:
Strong understanding of laboratory testing techniques specific to vegetable oil (e.g., FFA, PV, color, moisture, fatty acid profile). Knowledge of food safety systems and regulations (GMPs, HACCP, FSMA, etc.). Proficiency with LIMS systems and Microsoft Office Suite. Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills. Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. Certifications/Licenses:
PCQI Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with third-party audits and certifications (e.g., ISO, GFSI). Familiarity with ISO/IEC 17025 standards. Experience in R&D or product development support is a plus. SQF Practitioner a plus Working Conditions:
Willing to work in any of our operating locations (Arbuckle primarily, or Woodland as needed) Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer Laboratory and production floor environment with exposure to chemical substances and vegetable oil products. May require occasional evening or weekend work depending on production schedules. Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
