Essential Job Functions: Demonstrates and applies an in-depth knowledge of nursing principles, practices, standards, and techniques. Applies nursing knowledge in accordance with corporate and departmental procedures and adheres to policies and procedures of the department and Medical Center. Maintains a current awareness of the abilities and limitations of each staff member and assigns duties appropriate to each individual. Demonstrates patients plan of care by setting outcomes, follows through, and documents progress/lack of progress and teaching efforts during every shift worked. Assesses the patient and implements appropriate nursing actions to meet the patients physical, emotional, spiritual, social, and intellectual needs, documents those needs with appropriate multidisciplinary approach in a clear, concise, objective, and legible way. Maintains an active involvement in issues of cost containment at all times. Demonstrates ability to identify and solve problems using critical thinking and professional judgment. Demonstrates an ability to communicate effectively using pertinent data with physicians, patients, families, and peers. Demonstrates a positive role in evaluating, correcting, and re-directing patient care staff as needed. Effective and accurate and timely communication of problems and participation in resolution. Serves as clinical resource person to staff members in their daily activities. Initiates, supports, modifies, and improves nursing practice in providing patient care as departmental goals/objectives change and as nursing practice dictates. Regularly reviews work in progress to ensure care is proceeding as scheduled. Involves patient and families in education and preparation for discharge. Demonstrates the ability to prioritize and effectively utilize time management techniques. Marginal Job Functions: Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications: Required: Basic nursing skills, terminology, theory, techniques, and practices of professional nursing including the normal conditions of the specialty to which assigned. Concepts of medical surgical asepsis and disease processes. Effective communication skills in writing and speaking. Skills essential to the position are efficiency in care management, flexibility with priorities and activity, and demonstrated skills in analyzing problems, decision-making, planning, and implementing action. Knowledge of and ability to use specialized equipment for assigned unit. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with patients and their families, physicians, and fellow co-workers. Demonstrate leadership abilities and be able to counsel and guide employees as necessary. Courteous and accountable with maturity to accept responsibility for self. Demonstrates active listening skills and is objective and impartial. Demonstrate a calm, sure demeanor and be able to prioritize appropriately in a multi-tasks busy acute care environment. Adaptive to a multi-cultural, multi-lingual patient and staff population. Preferred: BSN Typical Physical/Mental Demands: Must be in good general health, be able to frequently stoop, bend, and reach. Must be able to withstand constant walking, standing, lifting at least 50 pounds or more, push/pull regulation hospital equipment, and occasional sitting. Must be able to function during periods of stress, trauma, and/or disease. Demonstrate knowledge of and practice of safe body mechanics and willing to be flexible within reason to meet the staffing needs of an assigned unit.
