Peer Mentoring Coordinator
La Sierra University is launching a Peer Mentoring Program to enhance academic engagement, retention, and student success across majors within the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). The Peer Mentoring Coordinator will design, implement, and manage this initiative, ensuring it aligns with university advising systems and department-specific needs. Working closely with the CAS Dean's Office, SASS, faculty, and Career Services, the coordinator will oversee mentor recruitment and training, program operations, and the development of communication and intervention protocols. This role also leads program assessment, data reporting, and long-term planning for integration into Student Academic Support Services. The coordinator plays a key role in fostering a culture of peer mentorship and student-centered support across CAS. This is a one-year position. Essential Duties: Design and implement a comprehensive peer mentoring program tailored to departmental needs across CAS majors. Collaborate with faculty, department chairs, and SASS advisors to recruit peer mentors, identify academic support gaps, and align program goals. Develop and maintain the program structure, including mentor roles, selection criteria, training curriculum, onboarding materials, and procedural guides. Lead mentor hiring, orientation, and ongoing training focused on communication, support strategies, campus resources, and professional boundaries. Establish clear communication protocols between mentors and advisors, ensuring alignment with existing advising systems and workflows. Support the development of early alert systems and coordinated outreach strategies for at-risk students in collaboration with SASS. Monitor mentor coverage and match mentees based on academic discipline, interests, and support needs. Foster a sense of community and shared practice among mentors through regular meetings and professional development. Promote the program through events, social media, faculty referrals, and campus communications. Collaborate with Career Services to integrate career readiness and student success resources into the mentoring experience. Serve as the main point of contact for departments and students regarding mentoring program logistics and resources. Work closely with the CAS Dean's Office to share program updates, address challenges, and coordinate planning. Establish and track assessment metrics to evaluate program impact, student satisfaction, and retention outcomes. Collect and analyze data, generate quarterly reports, and present findings for institutional and grant purposes. Contribute to the strategic planning process for the program's transition to SASS in the 20262027 academic year. Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Required Education & Experience: Bachelor's Degree in a related field and at least two years of experience working in student academic support programs for low-income or Hispanic students preferred. Experience in higher education, especially related to issues of student persistence and completion, transfer and articulation, low income, first-generation and other underserved college populations. Experience in developing and maintaining effective working relationships. Experience with La Sierra University's policies and procedures. Language Ability: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public in a variety of communication processes. Math Ability: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Reasoning Ability: Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills, including verbal and written, active listening, critical thinking and persuasiveness with the ability to clearly communicate in a professional manner. Ability to understand reporting requirements and produce accurate technical reports. Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Office, Google, Banner, Jaggaer and project management software. Certificates and Licenses: No certifications needed. Supervisory Responsibilities: None required. Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to work near moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Physical Demands: The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include Close vision, Distance vision, Peripheral vision, Depth perception and Ability to adjust focus.
